MAN at the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2016: a future-proof portfolio
MAN is presenting its new future-proof portfolio at the IAA in Hanover - the world's largest trade fair for commercial vehicles.
With the world première of the new MAN TGE, MAN is extending its product portfolio to include vehicles with a permissible gross weight starting at 3.0 tonnes, making it a full service provider for all transport requirements. MAN’s strong brand presence is rounded off by engines with new power levels, finely tuned transmissions, new interior and exterior design features focussing on the MAN lion trademark, as well as the introduction of the latest member of their coach family, the NEOPLAN Tourliner. At the same time, the traditional Munich-based manufacturer is preparing for the logistics of the future with new digital products and services.
A particular highlight of this year's IAA is the world première of MAN's new transporter product range, TGE. This commercial vehicle for distribution transport and the building trade can handle permissible gross weights from 3.0 to 5.5 tonnes, thus making MAN a full service provider. The new MAN TGE will be available in numerous customisable variants, boasting the best Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and an impressive payload of up to 1.5 tonnes. The completely new diesel engine generation installed in the vehicles is characterised by its durability, reliability and economy, promising new peak performances for the new MAN TGE when it comes to efficiency and the environment. At the same time, state-of-the-art assistance systems offer maximum safety and the usual professional MAN service is of course always at hand.
More power and a new design
In terms of design, MAN will be presenting a wide range of new features at the IAA. With regard to exterior design, greater emphasis will be placed on the MAN lion as an emotional marker. Appearing in a bold new design against a shiny black background, the lion on the chrome clasp above the grille is now even more prominent. The interior also devotes more attention to the lion, while the newly developed bright colours and fabrics for all textile surfaces create a completely new sense of space. The changes to the exterior and interior will be implemented on all new vehicles in the TGL, TGM, TGS and TGX series. With the new PerformanceLine edition of the TGX with an output of up to 640 HP, MAN combines top performance with equally high design standards in their strongest model.
The third generation of the tried-and-tested TGX EfficientLine was able to demonstrate even further improvements to its economic fuel savings potential during a 4000 km comparison run across Europe against its predecessor. Also on the trip was TÜV SÜD, which confirmed that the MAN TGX EfficientLine 3 provides additional fuel savings of 6.35% compared to the MAN TGX EfficientLine 2.
MAN Truck & Bus will also be presenting a range of measures designed to optimise the D26 and D38 engines at the IAA. The new engines offer more torque and greater performance with lower consumption. The new D26 and D38 engines also feature a new, more reactive catalyst material for the SCR system, which means that combustion and exhaust gas treatment can be optimised so that consumption is reduced even further.
The top engine model with 640 HP, which was previously reserved solely for heavy-duty versions, is now available for almost all variants of the MAN TGX D38. All other power levels have been increased by 20 HP respectively, meaning that MAN now offers 540 HP and 580 HP with the new D38. The tried-and-tested D26 engine also benefits from an additional 20 HP and 200 Nm in its new version, reaching a peak performance of 500 HP. In addition to the numerous emission-reducing measures, this engine now features the electronically-regulated engine brake EVBec as standard.
The two tried-and-tested MAN engine series D08 and D20 also come with a range of new features, which contribute to further reductions in fuel consumption while helping to maintain the engines' proven reliability.
A new member of the family and a wide range of new features
The NEOPLAN Tourliner is making its world debut in the bus sector as a new entry model in the field of premium coaches. The flexible usage possibilities, the large number of assistance systems and the excellent efficiency make the new NEOPLAN Tourliner a real all-rounder in its field. All new bus models also benefit from improved engine and transmission functions that offer increased torque and output as part of the optimised drive train, all whilst retaining the same low levels of consumption.
With its comprehensive bus portfolio, MAN has the perfect solution for every requirement in the field of intercity buses, city buses and coaches. City buses with a variety of available drive concepts already provide solutions for a modern public transport system, with the MAN Lion’s City CNG, for example, allowing for CO2-free operation thanks to the use of biogas. The MAN Lion’s City Hybrid reduces fuel consumption by recovering the kinetic energy used for braking and coasting.
All coach and intercity chassis also feature the latest assistance systems, which contribute to safety, comfort and efficiency. Another innovation in this area that will be presented at the IAA is the latest generation of pre-emptive cruise control systems, MAN EfficientCruise, which now for the first time features the EfficientRoll freewheel function that permits further optimisations to the fuel efficiency of MAN and NEOPLAN coaches. The MAN and NEOPLAN coaches also meet accessibility requirements stipulated for long-distance transport services in each segment.
With its new digital products and services, MAN is paving the way for the logistics of the future. At the IAA 2016, MAN is devoting a special platform to RIO – the new brand in the field of digital solutions from Volkswagen Truck & Bus. RIO is an open, cross-manufacturer business and technology platform that provides individual and uniquely intuitive digital services for the entire transportation and logistics ecosystem. Digital recording and processing and wide-reaching, cross-company utilisation of data forms the basis for the intelligent control of logistical processes. The transport chain is made up of both data providers and data users. As the initiator of RIO, MAN is responsible for its development within the Volkswagen Truck & Bus Group.
With regard to eMobility, MAN will be introducing a number of innovations at the IAA 2016. As well as presenting the fully electric MAN Lion’s City articulated bus as a concept vehicle and introducing different charging infrastructure concepts, MAN Truck & Bus will also be showcasing a TGS semitrailer tractor with electric drive for use in applications relating to inner-city night-time supply. Optimised for use with a city semitrailer, the concept vehicle offers a high load volume with a low tare weight, and is free from emissions (CO2, NOx, noise).
Thanks to its many years of experience with electrified drivetrains and the electrification of further components in the MAN Lion's City Hybrid, MAN Truck & Bus is in an excellent position to provide transport companies with a practical and efficient solution in the electric bus segment. MAN relies on a modular approach, through which charging technology can be selected and combined as needed, with the number of storage modules depending on the required range and transport capacity. In 2018, MAN will be sending a pre-series bus version of a battery electric vehicle (BEV) for field testing as part of its eMobility roadmap. Series production of a 100% electrically-driven city bus will commence before 2020.
The technological expertise from the eMobility modular system in the bus sector will in future also be available for electric truck applications. In addition, MAN’s membership in the Volkswagen Group means that it can utilise synergies within the Group and draw value from the dynamics of the passenger car sector.
MAN Latin America at the IAA
MAN Latin America will also be attending the trade fair, showcasing their truck range with two Constellation type trucks. The first is as a VW Constellation CNG truck with emission levels that meet the Euro 6 standard, the second a VW Constellation anniversary model, which celebrates its 10th anniversary with an improved transmission and high-quality interior details. The focus here is on environmental aspects, with the environmentally-friendly driver's cab partly fitted out with recycled materials. The third trade fair exhibit presented by MAN Latin America at the IAA 2016 is a Volksbus powered by sugar cane diesel.

MAN is taking numerous steps to optimise its engine programme for the 2017 range. These ensure significantly improved fuel consumption with increased performance and driving dynamics as well as the expected high level of reliability. The new generation D38 engine offers up to 640 HP and reaches its greatest torque - up to 3000 Nm - even at low engine speeds. Optimised for fleet applications, the new D26 offers a power spectrum from 420 to 500 HP with a simultaneously low tare weight and low fuel consumption. In combination with the new versions of the MAN TipMatic transmission with individually tuned driving programmes for every area of application, the MAN ranges also have highly efficient, economical and environmentally-friendly drivetrains.
EfficientLine 3 achieves additional fuel savings of 6.35%
Additionally, MAN will be bringing the latest version of the EfficientLine concept to the IAA, which combines all of the technical and aerodynamic fuel efficiency measures into one truck. To clearly demonstrate the fuel saving potential of the new EfficientLine 3 generation, MAN carried out a fuel consumption test journey with an MAN TGX 18.500 4x2 BLS EfficientLine 3 semitrailer tractor in July. The basis for comparison was provided by the truck's predecessor model - an MAN TGX 18.480 4x2 BLS EfficientLine 2 - which travelled with it along the same route. TÜV SÜD monitored how the measured values were determined. The official results confirmed that the EfficientLine 3 saves another 6.35% in fuel over 100 kilometres compared to an identically configured EfficientLine 2.
The new flagship with 640 HP: TGX PerformanceLine Edition
In addition, MAN will also be unveiling numerous design innovations for its TG series at the IAA 2016. Externally, the MAN lion stands proudly in the foreground. TGX and TGS receive newly designed and dynamic cooling air intakes. On the inside, warm colours with new materials and seat upholstery lend all TG models a bright and high quality feel, which is complemented by the distinctive steering wheel design. Furthermore, the driver’s workplace benefits from a new Infotainment system, automatic headlight activation and rain sensors in all models. The new MAN MMT Media Truck Advanced infotainment system is available in 5” and 7” screen versions, and offers a wide range of new features such as digital radio reception, effective traffic information, connection options for different auxiliary devices and a truck-specific navigation function upon request. As its absolute top model in the TGX series, MAN will be presenting the PerformanceLine Edition at the IAA 2016. As well as the numerous exclusive interior and exterior design elements, this special series also boasts the top-of-the-range engine with an output of up to 640 HP.

On the topic of alternative drives, MAN will be presenting an electric mobility concept vehicle in Hanover. The purely electrically-powered MAN TGS semitrailer tractor has been designed for inner-city night-time deliveries, such as store deliveries in the food retailing sector. The concept truck offers a generous load volume with a low tare weight, and is free from emissions (CO2, NOx, noise).
As a further focus for the IAA, MAN is putting strong emphasis on new approaches to networking the world of transportation. MAN is paving the way for the logistics of the future, and is devoting a special platform at the IAA 2016 to RIO – the new brand from Volkswagen Truck & Bus in the field of digital solutions.
RIO is an open, cross-manufacturer business and technology platform that provides individual and uniquely intuitive digital services for the entire transportation and logistics ecosystem. The new digital products and services offered by RIO will enable customers to optimise their logistics processes and manage product flows more efficiently thanks to intelligent networking. In addition to a number of world premieres, MAN Truck & Bus is also showcasing other vehicles and new technologies at the IAA. A new light hypoid tandem axle increases carrying capacity and reduces consumption. MAN Hydrodrive, a selectable hydrostatic drive in the front axle, boosts traction when needed and is now also available in combination with the MAN TipMatic automatic gearbox. With its new TGS-TS, a lightweight vehicle that can simultaneously handle maximum payloads, MAN is bringing targeted optimisation to the industry.
With a systematic orientation towards optimising transport within the industry, MAN Truck & Bus develops vehicles and technologies with a focus on delivering the highest possible cost-effectiveness and efficiency. Developments that reduce the unladen weight of the vehicle make it possible to increase the payload and therefore also the transport volume. Systems that can be switched on as and when required allow for a flexible use of the trucks even in unusual situations without having to make any compromise on efficiency and payload advantage in normal operation.
A plus for the payload: new light hypoid tandem axle
At the bauma 2016 earlier this year, MAN presented its new light hypoid tandem axle unit, which is particularly suited to transport operations where the payload is critical. The unit is being presented at the trade fair in the weight-optimised version of the four-axle truck mixer MAN TGS 32.400 8x4 BB, which weighs in at approximately 280 kilogrammes less compared to corresponding planetary axles. The weight advantage achieved over today’s conventional hypoid axles with a 13-tonne load capacity is 180 kilogrammes. In terms of truck mixers, this means, for example, that it is possible to transport 180 kilogrammes more concrete or water. The requirement for the use of thermo-insulated bodies when transporting asphalt adds additional weight. The operator is now able to compensate for this payload loss with a lighter axle unit. With a technical gross train weight of 60 tonnes, there are also applications outside the construction sector in distribution and long-haul transport.
Besides its benefits in terms of improved payload, this tandem axle unit also offers other advantages. The fuel consumption is slightly lower than in vehicles fitted with planetary axles. In a direct comparison, the new hypoid axle construction – designed for a payload of 11.5 tonnes – also offers additional ground clearance of approximately four centimetres. This means MAN now achieves the ground clearance required for N3G approval (off-road vehicle) with 315/80 R 22.5 tyres fitted.
The new axle unit is available for normal-height vehicles up to 480 HP with the leaf-leaf and leaf-air suspension versions of the TGX 6x4, TGS 6x4 and 8x4, but also for the TGM with 6x4 drive configuration. Additionally, the TGX 6x4 and TGS 6x4 and 8x4 also benefit from this equipment alternative in the medium height version with leaf-leaf suspension. The new tandem axle provides a transmission ratio of i = 2.85 to ensure an efficient drive train configuration. The longest ratio offered to date was i = 3.08.
A broader range of applications: MAN HydroDrive combined with TipMatic
With the presentation of the MAN HydroDrive in 2005, MAN introduced a new drive technology variant for trucks to the market. The technical solution of a hydrostatically driven front axle to increase traction when required and to deliver a strong braking effect on steep off-road slopes was received in many sectors with great interest. MAN is offering this system in the widest range of configurations available on the market. It can be provided for two-, three- and four-axle vehicles in the TGS series and for two- and three-axle semitrailer tractors in the TGX series and is ideal for vehicles that are primarily driven on surfaced roads and only occasionally need additional traction.
Typical areas of application are unsurfaced roads and construction sites, farm and forest tracks and unclean roads, or roads covered in ice and snow. The benefit of the hydrostatic front-axle drive really becomes evident if an off-road slope has to be negotiated without a load. A typical example of this is the tipping semitrailer tractor which has unloaded at the bottom of a pit. The rear axle, now under very little load, lacks traction on the incline.
The innovation of the HydroDrive combined with the MAN TipMatic automatic gearbox is now available to order at the IAA. Both the “on-road” and “off-road” gear shifting programmes are available. Milk collection vehicles are one example of the on-road application of the gear shifting software, while tipping semitrailer tractors and timber transporters are typical off-road applications. There are no restrictions on use of the engine and gearbox-dependent power take-offs.
MAN has continued to develop this system and improved its practical operation for users. MAN optimised the routing of the hydraulic lines with the introduction of the Euro 6 design. The clearance around the wheels has been increased to allow for larger rims and tyre widths – even with tyre chains attached.
The driver can activate the MAN HydroDrive using a rotary switch even under load and whilst driving. The system switches off automatically above a speed of 28 km/h. The system re-engages without driver intervention if the speed drops below 23 km/h.
The payload advantage compared to a conventional all-wheel drive is one of the recognised benefits of MAN HydroDrive. The weight advantage is 500 to 750 kilogrammes depending on the vehicle configuration. From a business perspective, the fuel saving represents a further benefit – when the system is switched off, the front wheels rotate freely, as with an on-road vehicle. MAN also offers this additional traction for vehicles with a normal height design. The low frame height makes it easier for drivers to enter and exit the cab. The body's lower centre of gravity has a positive effect on driving stability. All MAN TipMatic and MAN HydroDrive components are located below the top edge of the frame. MAN vehicles are thus distinguished by the unlimited options available in terms of bodies.
On descents, the HydroDrive transfers the engine braking effect to the front axle. This provides safety and lateral traction on slippery ground, resulting in overall improved vehicle control.
The payload heavyweight: the new TGS-TS for tank and silo haulage
The consistent industry-specific focus of the new MAN TGS series supports economic tank and silo haulage operations. In industries where goods are billed according to the transported volume, the payload is of high importance. For this reason, MAN’s focus for the TS version of the TGS range has always been on creating a lightweight vehicle that can simultaneously handle maximum payloads. MAN has optimised the unladen weight of the new MAN TGS-TS, making this vehicle the lightest customer-oriented semitrailer tractor for tank and silo operations in the MAN product portfolio. If all the measures are implemented, the unladen weight of the TGS-TS is no more than around 6560 kilogrammes. This permits an increase in the payload of more than 100 kilogrammes.
The measures that have been implemented include the reduction of the series standard 35 litre AdBlue tank to a capacity of 20 litres. Fastening the side panel in combination with the fender bracket saves both parts and weight. The changeover of the battery box to a version with two 155 Ah batteries instead of two 175 Ah batteries can provide a potential saving of 45 kilogrammes.
The TGS-TS now also features a new, lighter steering gear as standard. In combination with the new weight-optimised front axle and propshaft, these measures reduce the overall weight by up to 24 kilogrammes.
Irrespective of this, the MAN TGS-TS still benefits from the same design upgrade in the interior and on the vehicle front as every new MAN TGS. The aerodynamically optimised radiator fins improve air circulation. The bed behind the seats can be separated from the driver's workplace with curtains in sand beige.
The MAN TipMatic 12 26 DD Profi driveline includes new transmission-side features such as the combination of EfficientRoll with EfficientCruise, smart shifting, shift-support, rocking-free mode and idle speed driving. This means that the new MAN TGS-TS is not only optimised in terms of its payload but also benefits from improved efficiency.

The flagship of the MAN TGX series with an output of 640 HP is now released in a special limited edition numbering an exclusive 100 vehicles. With its bold blue interior design, this vehicle truly sets itself apart from the standard series model.
The MAN PerformanceLine Edition combines numerous special features in the driver's cab and the external design to create an exclusive premium vehicle. It is only available in the MAN TGX series with the top-of-the-range Euro 6 engine boasting an impressive 640 HP.
On the outside, the vehicle is equipped with mirrors casings and a lower protective radiator grille in elegant anthracite, set off perfectly by chrome applications on the two horizontal radiator fins. A sun visor, two air horns and plaque with the PerformanceLine logo on the doors round off the special edition design.
The interior of the TGX is a particular gem, with numerous applications featuring a distinct blue colour scheme: blue contrasting seams emphasise the contours of the leather multi-function steering wheel, the comfort seats and the floor lining. The lion symbol is imprinted in the head rests and also clearly recognisable as a blue outline on the underside of the top bed. The seatbelts and the inside of the all round curtains are also held in blue, as is the eye-catching brushed aluminium insert on the instrument panel. An additional PerformanceLine plaque on the instrument panel of the passenger side serves to further emphasise the exclusive nature of this special series.
The PerformanceLine logo also appears on the display when switching on the MAN Media Truck Advanced radio and navigation system, which is characterised by its outstanding sound quality and comprehensive additional functions such as digital radio reception as standard.
The leather interior trim and the seat covers in a blend of Alcantara and leather guarantee a feeling of exclusivity and comfort.
At the IAA 2016, MAN will be presenting the PerformanceLine Edition in form of a steel-blue metallic, dual-axle semitrailer tractor with an optional styling package. This package consists of high-shine polished front and side brackets in stainless steel, with integrated LED accent lighting and a solid roof beam with four halogen high-beam headlights.
Customers are, of course, free to choose their desired colour and vehicle design. There is a wide range of different variants, with two and three-axle semitrailer tractors and two to four-axle chassis in combination with cabs in sizes XL, XLX and XXL. Both left-hand and right-hand drive vehicles can be fitted out with the features of the PerformanceLine Edition. The MAN TGX PerformanceLine will be available as from the IAA 2016. Production will begin from January 2017.

MAN showcases the third edition of the MAN EfficientLine at the IAA 2016 trade fair. Its economic fuel-saving potential has already been proven in a comparative test drive with its predecessor. TÜV SÜD certifies that the MAN TGX EfficientLine3 delivers a further 6.35% fuel saving against the MAN TGX EfficientLine 2.
A look back to 2011: MAN show their commitment to increasing transport efficiency with the slogan “Consistently efficient”. MAN’s launch of the EfficientLine semi-trailer tractor took the sector by surprise. A controversial debate broke out among customers regarding some of the methods used to reduce fuel consumption. Passions ran high as the speed was restricted to 85km/h instead of 89km/h and attachments such as sunblinds and truck horns, which interfered with the aerodynamics, were omitted. MAN were proved right due to their success. Over 56,000 semi-trailer tractors with EfficientLine equipment have so far rolled off MAN's assembly lines.
A series of changes all played their part in contributing to this success. These included spoilers and side panels for optimising aerodynamics, lightweight construction in the form of aluminium parts for the compressed-air tank, rims and diesel tank, retarder installed as standard, air compressor controlled to meet requirements (APM, Air Pressure Management) and optional TPM tyre pressure monitoring for maintaining optimal tyre pressure.
MAN launched packages with elements of the EfficientLine design to optimise other basic vehicles such as semi-trailer tractors in the MAN TGS series or chassis such as on the swap body truck. Other European truck manufacturers responded by launching comparable models.
IAA 2016 will see the launch of the new MAN TGX EfficientLine. To clearly demonstrate the fuel-saving potential, MAN performed a consumption tour with an MAN TGX 18.500 4x2 BLS EfficientLine 3 semi-trailer tractor in July. The basis for comparison was provided by the truck's predecessor model - an MAN TGX 18.480 4x2 BLS EfficientLine 2 - which travelled with it along the same route. The TÜV SÜD monitored how the measured values were determined. The consumption tour stretched almost 4,000 kilometres through six European countries: Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain and Switzerland. The starting point and final destination was Munich.
The efficiency of the EfficientCruise - the latest generation anticipational cruise control - was demonstrated in particular on the topographically challenging sections of the route. The EfficientRoll freewheeling gearbox function came into effect on gentle inclines or slightly undulating route sections. The reworking of the new D26 CommonRail engine and the driveline redesigned for this with TipMatic gearbox 12+2 27 DD Profi and axle transmission ratio of i = 2.53 also played their part in reducing fuel consumption. On the basis of their trials over the course of the continued development of the driveline, the technicians at MAN had anticipated a fuel saving of at least five percent on this rout.
But even this positive estimation turned out to be too conservative on the consumption tour. According to the in-depth analysis of the measurement report provided by TÜV SÜD, the actual difference in fuel consumption between the EfficientLine 3 and EfficientLine 2 was 6.35%.
In order to illustrate this encouraging increase in efficiency in Europe and to promote the MAN TGX EfficientLine 3 in an eye-catching fashion at the IAA, these two vehicles took part in a promotional tour over the same route as the consumption tour as part of the MAN pre-IAA press conference on 20 July 2016 in Munich. This tour also spanned almost 4,000 kilometres through six European countries. The convoy was scheduled to make eight stops on route in Bregenz-Hohenems (Austria), Milan (Italy), La Junquera and Irun (Spain), La Corrèze (France), Bulle and Birr (Switzerland) and finally in Munich in order to allow customers and truck drivers in these locations to see the new MAN TGX for the first time. Alongside the tour, there were various different activities taking place in the countries such as competitions, the awarding of prizes and expert lectures. The primary focus of this was to post active updates about the tour to the various social media channels such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube. Daily video summaries and animated infographics outlining the features of the new MAN TGX EfficientLine3 kept enthusiasts up to date at all times throughout the tour. The virtual coverage of the tour was rounded off with an emotional look behind the scenes under the slogan “Faces of Europe” and creative collages depicting each country. On the whole, the interest over the course of the tour was very high. With 10,362 likes and 1,641 shares, Facebook was the most successful channel, reaching a total of 5 million people and consequently gaining 2,164 new likes for the MAN Truck & Bus Facebook page. On Twitter, up to 52,000 followers were reached and the account clocked up 37 retweets. On the whole, thanks to the broad, targeted organisation of the promotional tour and various contributions to social media, awareness of the new MAN TGX EfficientLine 3 has increased significantly.

MAN Truck & Bus is going to great lengths to enhance its range of engines in the lead-up to the IAA Commercial Vehicles 2016. These are set to ensure significantly better fuel consumption, increased efficiency and enhanced driving dynamics without compromising on reliability.
With the requirements of the Euro 6 emission standard about to change in 2017, MAN has taken the opportunity to overhaul its range of engines. The new engines offer more torque and greater performance with lower consumption. Furthermore, MAN has introduced a new, more reactive catalyst material for the SCR system in the new D38, D26 and D20 engines. Combustion and exhaust gas aftertreatment are thus optimised to such an extent that consumption decreases even further and emissions stay low. For the first time, the new D08, D20, D26 and D38 engines in all performance classes can also be operated with paraffinic fuels according to EN 15940, such as hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO).
The new MAN D38: Up to 640 HP for standard series engines
The 640 HP performance class in the new MAN D38 engine was previously reserved exclusively for heavy-duty designs, but with the new generation of engines, it is now available in almost all versions of the MAN TGX D38. MAN is also offering the new D38 with additional performance levels of 540 and 580 HP – an increase of respectively 20 HP compared to before.
Offering high torque at low speeds, the 15.2-litre, in-line six engine really does stand out from the crowd. Even at as low as 900 rpm, it can reach torques between 2700 and 3000 Nm, depending on the engine power. This makes it ideal to facilitate reduced fuel consumption and thus lower CO2 emissions.
Two-stage exhaust turbocharging
A key element of low-speed engine characteristics is the charging system which comprises two differently sized turbochargers connected in sequence. The smaller high-pressure charger responds even at low engine speeds, with the larger low-pressure charger providing additional support with increasing speeds and loads. When the engine is subject to high power requirements, the low-pressure charger takes over the majority of the compressor activity. This concept leads to an ideal supply of combustion air to the engine and thus an optimal torque curve which means that the maximum torque is available within a wide range of between 900 and 1400 rpm. A range of this size supports low-speed, economical driving on even terrain and less gear shifts on inclines.
Greater combustion and injection pressures
For the new D38 engine, MAN uses a third generation common rail system which injects fuel into the cylinders at up to 2500 bar. This leads to a finer dispersion of the fuel whilst enabling even more accurate pre-injection, main-injection and post-injection processes, making combustion particularly effective and reducing the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions even further. At the same time, the new generation of the common rail system facilitates maximum torque even at low speeds. With its low auxiliary power requirements, the optimised fuel pump further contributes to overall fuel efficiency. A further reduction in consumption is achieved by the air compressor, which can be switched off and also facilitates a quick filling of the air supply with its two cylinders. The Air Pressure Management system only switches on the compressor when compressed air is required, which stops it from running unnecessarily and therefore prevents additional fuel consumption.
Sensor-controlled fan speed
The new air management system keeps the operating temperature constant, ensures that it is reached more quickly, increases the usable drive power, and reduces fan noise.
Optimised oil cooling
The improved overall cooling efficiency is supported by an optimised oil cooling process. A new thermostat controls the engine oil temperature so that the optimal temperature is reached more quickly, and the engine can thus operate faster with the lowest possible friction. In drive mode – for example, on the motorway – the temperature control maintains the oil temperature at a slightly higher level to keep the internal engine friction to a minimum. A further reduction in friction is also supported by the steel pistons. The high strength of the steel alloy makes it possible to reduce the compression height, meaning longer connecting rods can be used to reduce not only the lateral piston force, but also the frictional force of the pistons in the cylinder liner. This serves to increase the service life of the components and simultaneously leads to a reduction in fuel consumption. In addition, the new D38 engine is also equipped with fire rings, which are installed at the top end of the cylinder liners. These minimise the accumulation of oil carbon on the piston crevice and thereby not only reduce wear but also further increase the service life of the engine. Due to its specifically developed plastic oil sump, the new MAN D38 engine is also one of the lightest units in its class.
The new MAN D26: Greater torque and performance with reduced consumption
In comparison to its predecessor, the new MAN D26 engine boasts even more torque and performance. It now comes complete with an extra 20 HP in each class as well as a greater torque of 200 Nm, which means that the D26 engine is available in new performance classes of 420, 460 or 500 HP.
MAN now offers the TGS and TGX series with the new D26 engine to meet customer requirements for the 500 HP class. With its performance range of up to 500 HP, not to mention its high torque, increased fuel efficiency, durability, and low weight, the new MAN D26 engine is one of the most effective drive units in its class.
Like the new MAN D38 engine, the new D26 offers a whole host of different technologies for reducing consumption. It is also fitted with new, low-friction steel pistons and fire rings, optimised oil cooling with thermostat, and sensor-controlled fan speed.
In addition, MAN has also reworked the turbo charger for the new D26, which now responds even faster due to its optimized efficiency in both the high- and low-pressure phases, particularly during mid-range acceleration at moderate speeds. Driving dynamics are vastly improved with the new D26, offering an enhanced torque curve and greater flexibility.
Optimised exhaust gas recirculation
The new D26 benefits from optimised exhaust gas recirculation, which results in a better admixture of the recirculated exhaust gases across all cylinders, along with improved charge cycles and enhanced combustion processes. These measures considerably reduce the level of nitrogen oxide found in the exhaust gas.
Regulated coolant pump
Yet another innovation of the new MAN D26 is a regulated coolant pump. Unlike the previous unregulated and constantly rotating coolant pumps, the fully engine speed-regulated design allows for coolant to be circulated as and when required. The pump performance is regulated continuously between 20 and 95 percent by means of a Visco clutch. This means that when demand for coolant is low – for example in long-haul transport – 80 per cent of the mechanical power required by the coolant pump can be reduced, resulting in significant fuel savings potential. At the same time, the engine also reaches operating temperature more quickly in the warm-up phase, which in turn reduces overall wear.
Electronically controlled EVBec exhaust valve brake as series standard
The new generation of the MAN D26 engine is supplied with the EVBec electronically controlled exhaust valve brake with a brake output of 325 kW (at 2400 rpm) as series standard. Its efficiency and direct incorporation into the brake management system support efficient and fuel-saving operation with a simultaneous reduction in wear on the wheel brakes and drivetrain components. It even makes a significant contribution to driving safety. This enhanced EVBec can be regulated continuously when activated via the brake management system in applications such as additional braking via the MAN BrakeMatic, the standard cruise control function, MAN’s EfficientCruise GPS cruise control, or the ACC Adaptive Cruise Control. If the driver manually activates the sustained-action braking function via the stalk switch, the braking torque can be controlled in stages. The brake management system then automatically controls the exhaust valve brake in five phases. If the vehicle also has a retarder, this is controlled in combination with the exhaust valve brake in six phases.
The new MAN D20 and MAN D08: Tried-and-tested technology with even greater reductions in fuel consumption
In the process of redesigning the truck engine portfolio, MAN has now also kitted out both its D08 and D20 engine series with a wide range of new features.
The new D20 also benefits from most of the innovative equipment found in the new D26 engine, including optimised oil cooling with thermostat, sensor-controlled fan speed, a regulated coolant pump, and improved exhaust gas recirculation. This also applies for the series standard fitting of the electronically regulated EVBec engine brake. It is features like these that make the new MAN D20 more fuel-efficient as well as being exceptionally reliable.
With the new D08, MAN is building on a proven concept, which includes an overhaul of the engine software. A new coolant level sensor prevents the engine from running with too little coolant, allowing any engine damage to be prevented in good time. Further innovations include the sensor-controlled fan speed and a new oil level sensor. Performance classes 250, 290 and 340 HP for the 6-cylinder model as well as classes 150, 180 and 220 HP for the 4-cylinder model remain unchanged. The 6-cylinder design with 340 HP boasts an optimised intercooler system, which reduces the thermal load of the cooling components as well as keeping wear to a minimum.

The new engine range in the Euro 6 classification for model year 2017 includes 14 output levels between 150 and 640 hp.
MAN Truck & Bus produces 4 engine series for use in its trucks at its engine plant. The common rail injection system is common to all MAN engines.
The D08 series covers the range from 150 to 340 hp. The 08 figure in the type description indicates a bore of 108 mm. The stroke is 125 mm. Each of the three performance levels are covered by the in-line 4-cylinder and the in-line 6-cylinder engine. These engines are intended exclusively for the TGL and TGM series in the truck range.
In the D20 engine series, the ‘D20’ refers to a bore of 120 mm. The stroke is 155 mm. Both the 320 hp and 360 hp variants are used in the TGS and TGX series.
For the model year 2016, the D26 engines series received new power ratings of 420 hp, 460 hp and 500 hp. The bore is 126 mm and the stroke is 166 mm. These engines, amongst others, are available in the TGS and TGX series.
The D38 6-cylinder in-line engines are reserved exclusively for the MAN TGX series. They cover the output class above 500 hp and, at 640 hp, are the most powerful engines offered by MAN for trucks. The figures for the stroke and bore are 170 and 138 mm respectively.

The MAN TipMatic gearbox: Faster shifting strategy and customer-specific application optimisation at the IAA 2016
MAN Truck & Bus introduces numerous driveline innovations in its new TipMatic generation at the IAA 2016, designed to reduce fuel consumption and increase driving comfort.
MAN has optimised the automated TipMatic gearbox in their vehicles with individual moving-off and switching strategies for each specific area of application and added various new functions to enhance efficiency and comfort. The new functions of the gearbox operate uniformly and are available for all 12-speed gearbox versions in the new TG generation. They have been specifically adjusted for the combination with the new D20, D26 and D38 engines in the Euro 6 design and for the respective area of application.
Purpose-built gearbox range
The new gearbox functions can be broken down into various gearshift programmes, which can be selected upon ordering a vehicle and are included as an additional identifier in the gearbox name (such as MAN TipMatic FLEET). Each gearshift programme has its own, specific moving-off and switching strategy. Road vehicles require a balance of enhanced convenience and efficiency, while the emphasis for heavy-duty vehicles is on power, especially when moving off with a high tonnage. As for offroad vehicles, these require improved performance and speed, while emergency services vehicles have to be able to accelerate quickly. With all of these different requirements, the moving-off strategy defines how the truck responds to the accelerator from a standing position. The switching strategy, on the other hand, specifies the gear to be used in each situation.
The following gearshift programmes are available to choose from: FLEET, PROFI, OFFROAD, EMERGENCY, COLLECT.
As the name suggests, the FLEET gearshift programme is specifically designed for fleet vehicles used in long-haul transport. In normal driving mode, it only allows for automatic operation, manual gearshifts are only possible while moving off, when coasting, or as an emergency function. Especially the faster and highly consumptive downshifting via the kickdown function over the accelerator is inhibited. FLEET is specifically designed for fuel-efficient driving, where drivers rarely have to change manually, meaning fewer distractions and a safer driving experience. This gearshift programme is particularly ideal for large fleets with frequent driver changes or for hire fleets.
In contrast, PROFI allows manual gear changes at any time, and the kickdown function for faster downshifting is always active by default. PROFI is primarily designed for comfort and to save fuel. When driving onto an incline, it increases the engine speed and thus makes large power reserves available at a very early stage, reducing the engine speed again at the end of the slope through timely upshifting into a higher gear. This makes it possible to achieve high average speeds without increasing fuel consumption. This gearbox range allows experienced drivers and those trained by MAN ProfiDrive to maximise the efficiency potential of their vehicle even better.
When it comes to driving off the beaten track and in harsh conditions, the OFFROAD gearshift programme is the ideal choice. The gearbox shifts more quickly to higher gears at higher engine speeds, and manual changes are possible at any time. The kickdown function is designed in such a way that upshifts can be inhibited before inclines. OFFROAD makes the maximum power available on inclines through later switching and uses the engine brake line to its full potential on downward gradients.
MAN’s COLLECT gearshift programme offers enhanced gearbox software that has been specifically designed for refuse collectors. Geared towards the operating conditions of vehicles with rear or side loader superstructures, the switching strategy is optimised for longer stop intervals with activation of the power take-offs and frequent moving off. This helps to improve the typical workflows of refuse collectors, which involve a substantial amount of starting and stopping, as well as a high number of gear changes between the collection points at peak times of the day.
The EMERGENCY gearshift programme is specifically designed for emergency services vehicles (such as fire engines, ambulances, or disaster control vehicles). In this programme, the gearbox shifts more quickly and at higher engine speeds. It also has a special downshift logic, which helps to find the right gear faster when accelerating. When heading to an emergency, specialist personnel can therefore count on the vehicle’s maximum acceleration capacity in any situation.
Whilst the FLEET and PROFI gearshift programmes can be considered standard gearbox ranges for normal driving situations, OFFROAD, EMERGENCY and COLLECT are additional programmes that are available alongside the conventional range. Drivers can use the gearbox selection switch to select the appropriate mode as required.
Every gearbox range is complemented by additional manoeuvring features, which can also be called up via the gearbox selection switch. These are specifically designed for low speeds in both normal and reverse mode. The accelerator is characterised by its exceptional sensitivity, which limits the engine speed and restricts the available gears to just the first two. In manoeuvring mode, these can only be selected manually using the stalk switch.
SmartShifting for even faster gear changes
The switching dynamics of the new MAN TipMatic are designed in such a way that gear changes can be made as fast as possible. The new SmartShifting function combines a rapid switching process in all gears to suit every driving situation. Taking the accelerator pedal position, vehicle mass and the calculated driving resistance into consideration, the gearbox software determines the optimum switching speed for every situation. The strategy behind the SmartShifting function is always based on striking the ideal balance between convenience, efficiency and speed.
In the new MAN TipMatic versions, the upshift support (HSU), which allows for gear skips of up to three levels at a time, is additionally supported by the electronically controlled EVBec engine brake. Especially in the case of large gear skips, the EVBec closes the exhaust throttle valve to create a rapid drop in engine speed in the phase where the clutch is open. In particular steep inclines can be tackled in a higher gear thanks to the upshift support.
EfficientCruise + EfficientRoll
With its new generation of gearboxes, MAN is further enhancing the potential to save more fuel. The new version of the GPS-supported MAN EfficientCruise with its anticipatory cruise control is now available in combination with the EfficientRoll gearbox function. This switches the gearbox into neutral on a gentle downward gradient to use the momentum of the vehicle without any drag losses.
EfficientCruise considers the topography of the road ahead so that it can adapt the vehicle’s operation and speed for a more efficient experience. What’s more, it also inhibits unnecessary downshifts in the MAN TipMatic gearbox. In comparison to benchmark vehicles with standard cruise control, the new version of MAN EfficientCruise with EfficientRoll saves up to nine per cent more fuel.
“Coasting along” in idle mode with Idle Speed Driving
The Idle Speed Driving function allows the truck to “coast along” through slow-moving traffic without touching the accelerator when the clutch is engaged. This function is available in the first six gears. While manual upshifting is possible, downshifting is performed automatically when the idling torque is insufficient for a higher gear or when the driver brakes. This allows the driver to let the truck coast along gently through the flowing traffic and increases the protection of the clutch.
Convenient free-rocking function
An added plus for safety and convenience comes in the form of the new free-rocking function in the MAN TipMatic gearbox. It facilitates easier moving off for trucks on snow or other slippery, unstable surfaces. If the toggle switch is activated in the switching strip, the driver can rock the vehicle free from a given situation by pressing and releasing the accelerator alternately. This function opens and closes the clutch according to the actuation of the accelerator so quickly that the vehicle rocks free. As part of this process, TipMatic automatically selects the appropriate gear to reduce the drive wheel torque and prevent wheel spins.
Basic MAN TipMatic gearbox versions
The new MAN TipMatic range is based on two basic gearboxes. The MAN TipMatic with 12 gears and two additional crawler speeds is available exclusively in the TGS and TGX series for 4x2 standard semitrailer tractors with the new D26 engine. The additional crawler gear speeds one and two are characterised by their smaller speed jumps when changing gear. This more sensitive gradation makes it possible to perform precise manoeuvres in even the tightest of spaces. The 12+2 gearbox has been specifically optimised for conventional long-haul transport and offers the ideal combination of exceptional driving comfort and fuel efficiency.
It is available in both direct drive (DD) and overdrive (OD) versions, and covers a torque range of between 2700 (DD) and 3000 (OD) Nm. A retarder with maximum braking torque of 3500 Nm can optionally be fitted. Alternatively, a retarder with a maximum braking torque of 4100 Nm is also available, which comes complete with a decoupling function. This makes it possible to separate the retarder mechanically from the flux when there are no braking requirements, thereby preventing friction losses caused by the retarder running unnecessarily.
The second basic MAN TipMatic gearbox with 12 gears and up to four reversing gears is suitable for use in all applications with the new MAN D38 and D20 engines. This includes all chassis, tipping semitrailer tractors, tank/silo semitrailer tractors, and special applications such as heavy-duty vehicles. With regard to the D26 engine, this also counts for all applications, except for the 4x2 standard semitrailor tractors. It is available in both direct drive (DD) and overdrive (OD) versions, and covers a torque range between 2900 (DD) and 3000 (OD) Nm. The retarder range comes in a standard version with a braking torque of 3500 Nm and a heavy-duty alternative of 4000 Nm. For heavy-duty requirements in particular, the range of applications covers up to 120 tonnes of permitted gross combination weight – without a converter clutch. A specific “heavy-duty” gearbox control is available for this type of application. The gearbox is characterised by its high levels of efficiency and extensive torque reserves. It contributes to low fuel consumption and offers a high level of switching and driving comfort in all applications.
Both gearbox versions have a tilt sensor, which provides the gearbox software with the necessary parameters to be able to select the appropriate gear regardless of the topography – particularly when moving off – for a comfortable experience that minimises strain on the drivetrain.

MAN Truck & Bus presents numerous design innovations for its TG series at IAA 2016. The MAN Lion impresses with a striking exterior look. TGX and TGS receive visually reworked and dynamic cooling air ducts. The interior of all TG models is characterised by a warm colour scheme, with new fabrics and seat covers creating a bright and high-quality image that is perfectly rounded off by the concise design of the steering wheel.
Additionally, the appeal of the driver workplace in all models is further enhanced with a new infotainment system, automatic running lights and a rain sensor. The new MMT MAN Media Truck Advanced infotainment system is available with a 5- or 7-inch screen option and a wide range of convenience features.
Exterior design innovations: dynamic image and strong brand identity under the mark of the Lion
One of the main aims of the MAN designers working on the new external appearance of the TG series was to put greater emphasis on the emotional figurehead of the brand identity, the MAN lion. The chrome lion positioned on the chrome trim above the radiator grille is significantly more prominent against the new high gloss black background. Inside the cab, the lion also has a more distinctive presence than before. The Lion motif now adorns the impact absorber on the steering wheel and also appears as a high-quality woven brand emblem on the base covering of the upper bed in all sleeper cab variants.
For the TGX and TGS series, MAN is also introducing a reworked front design at the IAA. Aerodynamically optimized radiator fins give the front a compact and unified appearance. The new fin elements with their upward angled blade profile improve the air flow to the radiator located behind and increase the cooling efficiency. Within the scope of the reworking process, the wide cabs of the TGX are equipped with two horizontal fins. These can optionally be enhanced with a adorning chrome trim. The narrower cabs of the TGS are fitted with a horizontal radiator fin, giving it a strong and robust appearance.
The TGX series tractor vehicles also benefit from the external update of the model. The cross member closing off towards the top lends the bumper and solid and stable look. It thus appears even more distinct and powerful.
The new exterior design will be applied for all new Euro 6 emission standard TGX and TGS vehicles, starting from model year 2017. At the same time, all TG series vehicles receive the new brand emblem with the lion on a black background, regardless of the Euro standard. Existing vehicles with the current Euro 6 design can be retrofitted with various elements of the new exterior design appropriate for the respective model.
Interior design innovations: new styles for a warm ambience
MAN has given the new TGX, TGS, TGM and TGL cabs a distinctive new character using newly developed surface colours and new fabrics for all textile surfaces. The interior design combines two worlds: on the one hand, it reflects the urban mobile world of being on the road for every-day business and on the other hand, a private area of calm, an itinerant home which exudes harmony and simultaneously sets contrast.
The new colour scheme is based on two key colours which are repeated in the seat and bed covers, the curtains, the roof liner, the carpets and the plastic surfaces. The one is “sand”, a modern shade of beige, and the other “graphite”, a warm shade of anthracite. These principal colour tones are reflected consistently in the new materials and interior surfaces. The new roof lining is woven from a mixture of three beige tones and designated as “Savannah”. The bed covers are described as “palladium anthracite” and are knitted using a blend of multi-coloured yarn. The curtain material reflects both of the main colours, a graphite exterior and a sand lining. The opaque textile structure of the curtains is of particularly high material quality which is pleasant to the touch and allows for a full darkening of the interior for a restful sleep.
In future, the carpet on the transmission tunnel will have an elegant nubuck binding and a contrasting stitching in “trace grey”. The floor covering of the cab now also features a warmer grey tone. The “sand” colour theme is reflected in the door flanks, speaker covers and the instrument panel. They form a broad, lightly coloured spectrum of warmth which is also picked up again in the front storage doors and roof window binding, optically widening the cabin towards the top and enhancing the sense of space.
The decorative trim running all around the dashboard offers increased options for customisation in the cab. There are three different decorative versions available. “Brushed Aluminium Dark”, a high-contrast finish with a warm metallic surface appearance, is available as the standard version for all TG models. “Trunk Wood Anthracite” provides a warm anthracite colour tone with a wood log appearance. “Net black” is a finish that graphically combines high-gloss and matt black structures. This lattice design also recurs again exclusively in the seat covers of the TGX series . The decorative trims are freely selectable, irrespective of cab, model or seat type - thus providing plenty of scope for customisation.
New steering wheels at the heart of the driver’s workplace
As a result of the reworking of the exterior and interior design, all TG series models are equipped with new standard steering wheels. These now have the same geometrical shape as the comfort steering wheels. Recessed grips provide outstanding ease of use for the principal task of driving. The standard steering wheel material is PUR (polyurethane). The comfort steering wheels are also available in an elegant leather design.
This optimises the centre of the driver’s workplace both optically and ergonomically. Particular prominence is awarded to the impact absorber, which has been redesigned for the standard as well as the comfort steering wheels and now boasts the three-dimensional chrome lion on a high gloss black background at the centre. The MAN brand is thus emotionally placed at the heart of the vehicle and matches the new design on the radiator grille. The frame and the lion are made from aluminium, polished to a mirror finish. The high gloss black background surface with a black piano lacquer appearance is particularly scratch-resistant.
New seat covers for a high level of comfort
As part of the reworking of the interior ambience, the seats are also fitted with new covers. The standard seats have a new seam pattern which creates a three-dimensional effect of woven fabric through its combination with the lattice design of the material. The structure of the fabric makes it an ideal seat cover, providing a sporty and secure grip as well as comfortable seating.
As an alternative, there is a new velour seat cover for the standard seat. It is called “New York” and has a trapezoidal pattern which gives the seat a sense of width and a dynamic feel. It is woven from high-quality flocked yarn and has a pronounced three-dimensional appearance which gives it depth both in terms of visual appearance and feel. This cover material also has good grip and provides excellent support when seated. The new velour cover is also available for the comfort seat.
From now on, MAN is also offering a new alcantara option for the comfort seat. In contrast to the full leather seats which have been available so far, the centre panels of the seats are now covered with original alcantara. This is a micro-velour material which feels similar to suede but is much more breathable and provides more secure support when seated. The side bolsters and front edges of the seat and the head rests are still covered in leather; a very durable combination. The leather and alcantara are colour-coordinated in graphite. If the comfort seat is equipped with the optional air conditioning function, the seat centre panels have additional micro perforations to optimise the air conditioning and breathability of the seats. On hot days, this helps to maintain a constant level of concentration for the driver.
The interior design innovations are available for all TG series models in the Euro 6 emission standard from model year 2017 onwards. For emission standard Euro 5 and 4 models, only the TGX and TGS series come with the new interior design.

Since 2009, MAN Truck & Bus has been working on new delivery and waste disposal vehicle concepts for urban environments. Cities and urban areas are increasingly facing the challenge of how to create a healthy climate for their inhabitants and their demands for quality of life, whilst reconciling this with ensuring the delivery of goods to city centres. The development of area-based and time-based traffic avoidance and modal shift concepts also comes into the equation, as do new approaches to space utilisation and new mobility concepts.
Against this background, MAN Truck & Bus already presented the MAN Metropolis concept vehicle back in 2012. The all-electric 26-tonne refuse collector vehicle is CO2-free and, with its very low noise levels, is ideal for night-shift applications in city centres. A range extender in the chassis increases its deployable range to a maximum of 150 km/day. Since then, numerous practical trials with the vehicle have provided valuable experience for future projects. The Metropolis received particularly positive feedback from the trial participants for its simple operation and driveability. In practice, it proved to be a versatile vehicle suitable for many different applications. Fuel savings compared with a conventional diesel-powered vehicle were around 80 percent with the range extender.
MAN Truck & Bus is presenting a further development of the Metropolis concept at the IAA 2016. This time, it’s an electrically-powered semitrailer tractor for applications in night-shift deliveries to city centre locations such as those normally utilised today by food supermarkets. Technically, it is based on a TGS 4X2 BLS-TS semitrailer tractor with an 18 t permissible total weight.
The concept vehicle, which is optimised for operation with a City semitrailer with steerable single axle, fulfils the main demands being placed on future delivery vehicles for city centre applications, namely that they must have a high load volume and a low unladen weight, be emission-free (in terms of CO2, NOx and noise) when on the move and at the same time have good manoeuvrability.
Driving this pioneering MAN City Truck concept vehicle is a 250 kW electric motor which delivers its 2700 Nm of torque to the rear axle via a propshaft. Auxiliary units, such as the power steering, air compressor and the air-conditioning system, are electrically operated and controlled via the energy management system as required to ensure energy savings. The braking energy recovery system converts the kinetic energy of the vehicle into electrical energy during acceleration phases, and utilises the energy for recharging the battery. A colour display in the cockpit informs the driver about the current energy parameters, such as battery charge level, energy recovery and charging mode. This therefore ensures that the vehicle is particularly energy efficient when in motion.
The energy for the truck is provided by three 35.3 kWh high-performance lithium-ion batteries which are arranged under the driver’s cab above the front axle, where most standard vehicles have the diesel engine. The weight of the batteries is therefore over the front axle which enables the full load capacity of the rear axle to be used for the payload. The additional weight of the electric drive components is compensated for by dispensing with the conventional diesel engine, with the result that the vehicle has the same payload as a similar, conventional semitrailer tractor from the TGS model range.
Depending on use, the battery capacity of the new concept vehicle permits a daily range of between 50 and 150 kilometres. The batteries are normally charged overnight. The system is also designed to be suitable for the so-called "opportunity charging" i.e. intermediate charging during vehicle operation. This rapid charging method during intermediate stops, e.g. when the driver takes a break, or while loading and unloading the vehicle, provides greater flexibility for operational and route planning. The concept vehicle also has the technical infrastructure for the installation of up to four additional batteries (each with a capacity of 35.3 kWh) on the side of the frame and/or a range extender or fuel cell, likewise mounted on the side of the frame. This degree of flexibility increases the vehicle’s range, satisfying customer requirements.
The eTruck Study presented at the IAA will enable MAN to implement additional testing in the field of electrically powered trucks and gain valuable experience with real transport concepts. It represents just one aspect of the eMobility strategy from MAN Truck & Bus and offers a glimpse of the city centre transport solutions which are due to be part of MAN’s product range as of 2021.
As part of its eMobility Roadmap, MAN is planning to unveil a pre-production bus version of a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) to the public by 2018. Series production of a 100-percent electrically-powered city bus will commence before 2020. In the future, the engineering expertise of the eMobility modular system for buses will also be available for eTruck applications. Furthermore, as a member of the Volkswagen Group, MAN is also able to utilise group synergies and benefit from the dynamics of the passenger car sector.

From mid-2016, new infotainment systems with larger displays and refined sound will be available in the MAN TGX, TGS, TGM, TGL and TGS WorldWide.
The top-of-the-range model is the MAN Multimedia Truck Advanced, boasting a 7-inch display, DAB+ (digital radio reception), convenient telephony and enhanced, truck-specific navigation.
Sound sources: streaming, SD cards, cable
How do you connect your favourite soundtrack or audio book to the sound system? The new infotainment systems offer a wide range of possibilities for this. The wireless streaming function has been enhanced, meaning that you can use your own tablet, smartphone or laptop with Bluetooth functionality as easily in the truck as at home, giving you access to your own extensive music library. Devices connected via Bluetooth can also be operated via the controls in the MMT Advanced, allowing you to leave your smartphone in your pocket and operate the device safely.
Smartphones and tablets can also be charged up via the USB port next to the shelf in the instrument panel (optional), and music can be played directly via the USB port using a memory stick.
The memory card slots offer an additional option: the MMT Advanced has two Micro SD slots, providing enough space for both the navigation memory card and a music memory card at the same time. The MMT automatically reads the various standard digital music inputs. Music can also be played via a 3.5 mm stereo jack cable.
The sound system offers a high-quality audio experience and, in the full equipment version, includes two woofers, two tweeters and a subwoofer. To achieve the perfect sound, the acousticians have specially fitted the new MMT with the right sound system for each cab size.
Convenient telephony and voice control
The MMT's enhanced Bluetooth functionality allows two telephones to be connected to the MMT simultaneously, for example a business and a personal phone. The priority telephone can be operated safely and ergonomically while driving, via the multi-function steering wheel and the MMT. The driver can access telephone data (e.g. the phone book or call list) via the infotainment system. The truck's integrated microphone and voice transmission via the vehicle loudspeaker ensure excellent voice quality for telephone calls. This is also helped by the system's high-quality echo and noise reduction function.
The MMT's integrated voice control allows the driver to operate the radio navigation system via voice commands. For example, navigation destinations can be given or telephone contacts selected, and the driver can continue to focus on the road.
Digital radio DAB+
In addition to standard VHF radio functions, the MMT Advanced enables digital radio programmes to be received (DAB = Digital Audio Broadcasting). Digital radio transmission has many benefits, such as the highest sound quality, more available stations, and reliable transmission of a station without interruption on the motorway throughout Germany. DAB is already available across Germany, and DAB programmes are also transmitted in Switzerland, Norway and Denmark.
As well as music or talk shows, DAB also enables additional digital information to be received, known as DAB+.
This offers the option, for example, of accessing much more advanced traffic updates, known as TPEG (Transport Protocol Experts Group). This enhances the navigation capabilities of the MMT Advanced.
Professional navigation for trucks
The centrally positioned MMT Advanced therefore offers not just the best sound and radio quality for entertainment, but is a specialised truck navigation unit which guides driver and truck securely and efficiently to their destination. The navigation map is stored on a Micro SD card. Music can continue to be played via the second card slot while the map is in use, or via the streaming function.
As part of the truck-specific navigation, the map will be updated annually until 2025. Taking into account the dimensions of the truck, which can be defined by the driver (e.g. vehicle length with or without the trailer), the navigation unit suggests a suitable route and warns the driver of any height or weight restrictions. Route options can also be applied, meaning toll roads or residential areas can be avoided, for example.
The traffic information and traffic jam avoidance functions are particularly advanced. If preferred, the MMT will use premium traffic information; in European countries, TMC and TPEG allow access to much more advanced traffic information, for example truck-specific news (such as roads being closed to trucks, or danger of crosswinds).
TPEG transmits traffic information via the digital radio (DAB+). For this to work, digital radio must be available in the respective country. One particular advantage of digital radio is the volume of data that can be transmitted via the DAB+ radio signal, which has an additional channel specifically set up for traffic information. This channel provides a lot more information, with a greater level of accuracy. While the traditional TMC traffic signal only records the road network via a general grid system and can therefore only give approximate information about traffic jams, TPEG is much more precise and even allows the navigation unit to give information on the traffic flow.
Installation of external cameras
The MMT Advanced has two inputs for external cameras. These can be displayed manually or can be programmed to display automatically when using specific functions. For example, the images from the reversing camera can automatically be displayed on the monitor when the truck is in reverse, or the driver can manually switch to an available cargo hold camera.

The modern range of products in the MAN CLA Evolution series includes tractor units in various axle combinations and chassis’ with or without bodywork. At IAA Commercial Vehicles 2016, MAN will be showcasing the new market-specific configurations for the series, new design elements and the eco-friendly Euro 6 engine with a 6.9-litre cylinder capacity. The sophisticated vehicle concept offers proven technology and fulfils the requirements of a robust, reliable truck for any operating conditions to be found within the export markets. The vehicles are manufactured at the MAN production site in Pithampur (India), which is certified in accordance with ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001. Thanks to the robust chassis, the economical and reliable engines and the chassis, which is designed for adverse road conditions, the CLA series is ideally suited for the Asian, African and Middle Eastern markets. This combination of durable and easily maintained technology is guaranteed when using the MAN CLA Evolution, even in countries with a less developed service infrastructure.
Optimised for specific markets
The series is robust and reliable, as well as being easy to maintain thanks to its minimal use of electronics. The fittings are individually tailored to the target markets, enabling the configuration of the vehicles ex works for specific applications. These robust trucks are now being exported via existing MAN sales structures to 40 markets. Since being introduced to the market ten years ago, the series has been delivered to a wide range of international customers.
There are two-, three- and four-axle vehicles and chassis, tippers and transport mixers available, as well as chassis for special bodies. The proven MAN AP-axles are intended primarily for use in local and distribution transport, whilst hypoid axles are available on some models for long-haul versions. There are now also new region-specific rear axle ratios adapted to the driving speeds in different countries, while an ADR fitting for transporting hazardous materials is also available to order. The MAN CLA Evolution is available in left- or right-hand drive versions.
New cabin design
Depending on the area of application, there are two different choices of driver cabin for the MAN CLA Evolution. The short and functional Day Cab is suitable for local transport use and for construction sites utilising the maximum payload. The ergonomic seats, adjustable steering wheel, decluttered instrument panel, easy-to-reach functional buttons and good all-round visibility offer high levels of comfort and functionality. The straight design of the instrument panel allows the driver to easily enter and exit the vehicle on either side, regardless of the delivery situation. Customers also have the choice of the medium-length Sleeper Cab with its comfortable lounger, where the driver can unwind during resting periods. Furthermore, customers can now select either a winter or heat package depending on their region.
New to the current MAN CLA Evolution are the H7 headlights, which increase safety on account of their high light output with a low energy consumption. The redesigned bumper in plastic or steel and the radiator grille reinforce the modern design and support reduced fuel consumption. The aerodynamic spoiler package prevents the sides of the cab from being heavily contaminated. A rear window in all models provides the driver with better all-round visibility.
In order to adapt to the respective road conditions and loading situations, the MAN CLA Evolution has an extremely robust chassis with large 20 or 22.5-inch tyres. The leaf-sprung front axle is designed to carry loads ranging from 6 to 7.5 tonnes depending on the country. The rear axles – either planetary hub or hypoid – also have leaf springs and can carry up to 22 tonnes depending on the model. The high-strength frame design and body-friendly frame construction provide a high payload. The new 6x4 version of the MAN CLA Evolution 31,300 model has now been re-approved for 31 t loads, with the 8x4 version increased to 37 t. This payload advantage is particularly noticeable with large tippers or transport mixer chassis’ with 7 m³ cylinders, whose volume can now be better utilised. The chassis impresses with its high level of driving comfort in every setting.
New Euro 4 engine for the MAN CLA Evolution
The MAN CLA Evolution is being offered with a Common Rail 6-cylinder in-line engine with 220 hp, 230 hp, 280 hp or 300 hp. The new EURO 4 6.9-litre unit is at present intended for the Indian, Moroccan and Filipino markets. Now with 300 hp at 2300 rpm, it achieves a torque value of 1150 Nm at 1200–1800 rpm. The vehicles are available with either a ZF 9-gear overdrive gearbox or 6-gear overdrive gearbox from Eaton. In addition, there's also an Allison automatic gearbox available. These well-matched components allow for the design of powerful drive trains for all types of vehicles and application areas up to a permissible gross vehicle weight of 40 tonnes. Furthermore, the vehicles are equipped with a wear-free exhaust valve brake, which not only increases the engine braking performance, but also prolongs the lifetime of the service brakes.
The MAN CLA Evolution product range is still being developed on an ongoing basis, to ensure that, in future, goods and passenger transport in the target markets continue to be sustainable and environmentally friendly in nature. As a subsidiary of MAN Truck & Bus, MAN TRUCKS INDIA Pvt. Ltd. produces and sells trucks and buses from the CLA series for the Indian market and other selected markets. MAN CLA Evolution vehicles are exported both as TiB (truck in the box) assembly kits and complete units manufactured in India via MAN distribution companies in Asia and Africa. With this long-term strategic investment, MAN Truck & Bus is highlighting the major importance of the Indian market in its future strategy.

One of the most interesting innovations on show at the MAN Truck & Bus exhibition stand is in the field of city buses: an all-electric MAN Lion’s City articulated bus, presented as a modular concept vehicle along with the associated charging technology. MAN is using these exhibits on view in the innovation area of the exhibition stand both to demonstrate how the different charging systems, namely rapid charging via an automatic interface (pantograph) and recharging via the CCS interface, can be integrated into one vehicle, and to provide an overview of the various energy storage possibilities. MAN is adopting a modular approach, whereby both the charging technologies and the number of energy storage modules can be selected and combined as needed, depending on the required range and transport capacity. Alongside the battery modules currently installed in the bus, therefore, there is also a fuel cell on show as a potential solution. This approach, whereby electric vehicles can be tailor-made from modules to meet the specific needs of the operator, is referred to at MAN as eModularity.
In accordance with its eMobility-Roadmap, MAN is scheduled to start field trials with pre-production vehicles in 2018. Series production of battery-electric buses will commence at the end of 2019.
The current City Bus portfolio
MAN already provides efficient solutions for public transportation today. The current generation of MAN Lion’s City city buses has been continuously product-optimised to reduce fuel consumption. One of the components contributing to this is the new radiator flap. Examples on show at the exhibition stand include a MAN Lion’s City L LE and a MAN Lion’s City CNG. Both vehicles are equipped with three doors from the new MAN door portfolio. These inward and outward swinging doors and the swing/sliding doors have been developed in-house and are noted for their very robust design and fast, smooth operation.
Working away at the heart of the MAN Lion’s City L LE is the new D2066 LUH engine with optimised driveline and an output of 320 HP (235 kW). The three-axle vehicle is 14,705 mm long and provides space for up to 128 passengers, 49 of whom are seated. As almost all MAN Lion’s City models can run on biodiesel and, from January or April 2017, also on HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), MAN can now provide a full product range with alternative drive systems alongside the tried-and-tested Lion’s City Hybrid.
Offering the prospect of CO2-neutral operation is the MAN Lion’s City CNG whose E2876 LUH engine can also be operated with biogas. From a displacement of 12,816 cc, it generates 310 HP (228 kW). The gas cylinder can hold 1,260 litres of CNG, natural gas or biogas. One special feature of the vehicle on show at the exhibition is the LED step edge lighting on all doors. Among the systems providing additional safety are ESP and the EBS electronic brake system with ASR and ABS.
Also on view in the external show area at the IAA are a MAN Lion’s City Low-Entry CNG bus and a 23-metre bus/trailer combination for intelligent coverage of capacity peaks.
Coaches for every application
The new NEOPLAN Tourliner is making its world debut at the MAN stand. The latest member of the NEOPLAN family is a true all-rounder and creates the opportunity to break into the premium segment. Its 44-person seating capacity makes it ideal for long-distance coach travel and excursions, as well as for high-end travel operations. In addition to the 12,113 mm long version on show here, the vehicle is available in three further lengths.
Providing the necessary power is the 420 HP (309 kW) D 2676 LOH engine which is combined with the TipMatic 12-speed automated gearbox. As with all NEOPLAN buses, a full range of assistance systems is available, including the electronic stability program (ESP), the lane guard system LGS, the emergency brake assistant EBA, a rain/light sensor, tyre pressure monitoring for all axles, MAN Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and the new generation of the MAN EfficientCruise anticipatory cruise control with EfficientRoll freewheel feature.
No less well-equipped are the MAN Lion’s Coach and the NEOPLAN Skyliner which are on show at the IAA 2016 in their long-distance configurations. Among the features on view are a lifting platform on the MAN Lion’s Coach and a folding ramp on the 2nd door of the NEOPLAN Skyliner, as well as a facility for moving seating quickly and easily to provide space for up to two wheelchairs. The seats remain inside the bus, and only a few manual movements are required to move them, meaning it can be done en route without overtaxing the driver. The new passenger seats in the MAN Lion’s Coach are equipped with adjustable headrests which provide even more comfort on long-distance journeys. The buses are also equipped with extra large fresh-water and sewage tanks to meet the demands for extended utilisation on long-distance journeys.
The new Multi Media Coach Advanced infotainment system is also available in both vehicles. Amongst other functions, it allows two mobile phones to be connected simultaneously via Bluetooth. Voice control in up to eight languages will also be implemented for MMC Advanced in the future. The navigation system can also be easily viewed on the seven-inch display. One new feature is that the system can now suggest new routes based on the current traffic situation. The NEOPLAN Cityliner and NEOPLAN Skyliner will be equipped with the new MMC Advanced for units delivered from the beginning of 2017. The MAN Lion's Intercity will then follow on in early summer 2017, followed by the MAN Lion's Coach.
Another innovation on show is the MAN Lion’s Intercity C. This seating-optimised variant with a new length of 13,250 mm can accommodate up to 63 seated passengers. This therefore makes this two-axle vehicle perfect for transporting school children and for intercity travel. The vehicle on the stand at the exhibition has a D0836 engine with an output of 290 HP (213 kW). To meet requirements for intercity travel, the vehicle displayed has been equipped with stop-request buttons, a payment counter and destination display. The MAN Lion’s Intercity is noted for its above-average level of comfort and safety and already complies with the ECE R66.02 rollover regulation, for example. In addition, the bus on display is equipped with numerous assistance systems such as the emergency brake assistant EBA, adaptive cruise control ACC, and the lane guard system LGS.
The exhibited NEOPLAN Cityliner is a perfect example of the range of services which the MAN Bus Modification Centre can provide. Located in Plauen, the Centre’s multi-disciplinary team of specialists has been creating individual designs to customer specifications since May 2015. There are no limits to the possibilities available. The 420 HP two-axle vehicle displayed at the exhibition stand resembles a "rolling concert auditorium" with 1000-watt loudspeakers and a comfortable lounge in the rear of the vehicle which accommodates up to eight people. The coloured LED interior lighting guarantees a perfect ambience. In addition there is a fully equipped individual kitchen, two electrically retractable back-to-back tables equipped with 230 V sockets, an infotainment system with video-on-demand and local entertainment content and a glass skylight.

It only takes one look to see that the new NEOPLAN Tourliner is part of the NEOPLAN family. The front dome that extends stylishly into the roof, the distinctive headlights and the sharp-cut design that has already received multiple accolades all paint an unmistakable picture: here comes a true NEOPLAN. This vehicle really is ideal for anyone looking to add a standard segment coach to their existing fleet, whilst retaining a uniform appearance.
A design feature that will immediately catch the eye of observers is a feature that all NEOPLAN coaches will be equipped with following the IAA 2016: the newly designed headlights. The previous silver background is now black, giving them a more updated look. Another new feature is the LED daytime running lights, which are designed as an illuminated ring (sidelight ring) around the low-beam light. This design feature is mainly found in sports cars, which is why it is the perfect complement to the dynamic aesthetics of the NEOPLAN Tourliner and the other NEOPLAN coaches alike.
High-end facilities for passengers and drivers
The colour-coordinated interior greets passengers with an abundance of light and a spacious feel, further emphasised by its floating luggage racks. The new colour concept is a bold exploration of contrasting grey and beige tones that create a luxurious atmosphere. New developments in the field of lighting design mean that LED lights can be used to illuminate the interior. They can also be found in the new overhead service sets, which now offer increased comfort levels thanks to indirect, draught-free ventilation with individually adjustable ventilation nozzles. The ventilation system as a whole has been given a complete overhaul in order to improve the climate inside the coach. Twin USB outlets can be installed on almost all of the seats.
The level floor gives the business operators plenty of space to configure this true all-rounder in order to best suit their specific intended purpose. Furthermore, the centre aisle has been raised, meaning that passengers can get to their seats and the luggage racks more easily. A lifting platform is also available for long-distance travel in both the left- and right-hand drive models, with the option of pushing together up to six rows of seats on rails to create space for up to two wheelchairs.
The NEOPLAN Tourliner provides the bus driver with a seat that has been optimised with ergonomics in mind. Among the improvements to this area is the overhaul of the lateral operating panel, which now features improved trays that have been adapted to accommodate frequently used items such as an A4 folder or a large drink bottle. The controls have also been rearranged to improve user ergonomics. The latest generation of the Multi Media Coach (MMC) infotainment system is ready and waiting to liven up the journey. It is available in either the MMC Basic version (5-inch display) or MMC Advanced version (7-inch display). The system boasts a number of new features, including voice input and the option to connect up to two smartphones at once. Every aspect of the driver’s workplace exudes high quality and top-end workmanship.
This bus is sure to impress both in terms of its appearance and efficiency. The new exterior design has once again increased its aerodynamics by more than 20% in comparison to the previous model. The new NEOPLAN Tourliner has a drag coefficient of only Cd = 0.36, which is equivalent to that of a modern mid-size van. This is achieved in part by the new exterior mirrors, which feature improved wind resistance and provide a better view.
In addition, the D26 engine now comes with increased performance and torque, featuring an optimised driveline that allows for fuel savings of up to 10%. This is due to the long final drive ratio of i = 2.73 and the optimised shifting strategy among other things. The new generation of MAN EfficientCruise has also been added to the line-up now, meaning that the MAN EfficientRoll free-wheel feature is available for coaches for the very first time. This ‘sailing’ mode provides a gain in efficiency even on slight downward gradients by automatically shifting the gearbox to the neutral ‘N’ position and allowing the bus to move with as little engine friction loss as possible.
Improved safety and service
The safety features of the NEOPLAN Tourliner have also been upgraded. For instance, the alertness assistant MAN AttentionGuard is now available for the very first time. The aim of the assistance system is to recognise when a driver's focus is decreasing and to issue a warning if necessary. It analyses a range of data in order to do this, including information from the lane guard assistance system (LGS). If the MAN AttentionGuard notices a drop in attention, it delivers a visual, acoustic and haptic warning to the driver but does not actively intervene in the driving process. Just like all other NEOPLAN coaches, the NEOPLAN Tourliner also features a wide array of assistance systems, including the emergency brake assistant (EBA), the adaptive cruise control (ACC) and the tyre pressure monitor (TPM). The new service interval calculator improves vehicle availability by monitoring and predicting service dates and component wear.
The reinforced skeleton structure represents an improvement in the passive safety of the vehicle and already complies with the rollover standard ECE R66.02, which will be coming into force in 2017. This standard requires the skeleton to absorb an extra 50% of the energy generated by a rollover, which MAN has achieved through its patented ‘tube-in-tube’ technology and by using high-strength steels. The new NEOPLAN Tourliner also features two extremely strong roll bars in the region of the B-pillar and at the back of the vehicle.
Maintenance and repair work is made easier by features such as the improved hatches on the luggage compartments, engine compartment and front panel, which are now more lightweight and have been optimised in terms of their kinematics. For instance, the front panel is made of several parts, so that individual parts can be replaced if they are damaged in an accident, eliminating the need to replace the entire front of the vehicle. Furthermore, the corners of the front panel and the attached headlights can be folded forwards. This enables the driver to change the bulbs quickly and easily. The shortened wheel cutout trim panels with their segmented design provide further benefits. Firstly, they add approximately 18 cm more room for accessing the luggage compartment. Secondly, the wheel cutout trim panels that were previously designed as a single piece in the three-axle versions are now divided into two separate segments. If damage occurs, they can be replaced more easily, more quickly and at a lower cost.

With the MAN Lion's Intercity C, MAN Truck & Bus is now also offering its award-winning intercity and school bus in a version with optimised seating.
The MAN Lion’s Intercity C first showcased at the IAA 2016 measures 13,250 mm and thus presents another attractive high-capacity variant in addition to the established 12,280 mm and 13,050 mm models. While this may not look like a lot at first glance, the benefit is clear to see when it comes to the number of available seats: up to 63 passengers (or 59 plus one wheelchair) can now fit on this two-axle school and intercity bus. The MAN Lion's Intercity is a well-designed product that excels in terms of safety, and guarantees that its passengers are both comfortable and safe. In keeping with this, it already comes standard with electronic stability program (ESP). In addition, the emergency brake assistant (EBA), lane guard system (LGS) and adaptive cruise control (ACC) are also available as optional extras. Plus, the MAN Lion's Intercity already complies with the ECE R66.02 EU standard, which is due to come into force in 2017.
The focus during the development stage was on consistently optimising the total cost of ownership through maintenance-friendly design, economical consumption with a wide range of drivetrain solutions to suit customer requirements, and on providing a high level of reliability thanks to outstanding manufacturing quality. This is ensured among other things through cathodic dip painting (CDP), which is applied as standard for corrosion protection. The distinctive shape of the MAN Lion's Intercity means it delivers best values when it comes to aerodynamics, which in turn has a positive impact on consumption. The high seating capacity also means that this vehicle achieves particularly low CO2 emission levels per passenger.
The MAN Lion’s Intercity, which was unveiled to the public for the first time at the Busworld 2015 exhibition, was presented with the internationally renowned iF Gold Award this spring and also nominated for the German Design Award. The verdict of the jury was: “It convinced the award panel with its timeless design, clear lines and perfectly balanced proportions. All the details are finished to perfection, with the interior matching the exterior and vice versa, while the windows and doors are elegantly integrated and the colour scheme, the materials and surface shape are perfectly designed.” The conclusion was that the intercity bus had thus successfully proven that exciting innovative design solutions can be found even for standard tasks.
The criteria for the distinguished award, which has been presented annually since 1953 by iF International Forum Design, include the external appearance and shape of the product, as well as the degree of innovation, ergonomics, functionality and environmental sustainability. As one of just 75 gold award winners out of a total of 5295 entries, the MAN Lion’s Intercity prevailed over its competition in the category “Automobiles/Vehicles/Bikes”, which included sports cars and motorbikes from several leading manufacturers among other things.

Providing optimum drive technology for each area of application is and has always been an important aspiration for MAN. Today, the Lion’s City bus family offers, alongside diesel technology, a wide range of alternative drives in all length variants. MAN aspires to offer its customers commercially viable and sophisticated vehicles. This applies both to diesel buses and alternative fuels as well as e-mobility solutions in the city bus segment.
Thanks to many years of experience with electrified drivetrains and components in the MAN Lion's City Hybrid, MAN Truck & Bus is also in an excellent position to provide transport companies with a practical and efficient solution in the electric bus segment. MAN relies on a modular approach, through which charging technology can be selected and combined as needed, with the number of storage modules depending on the required range and transport capacity. As a first step, MAN is concentrating on the established technologies of rapid charging (via automated conductive interface) and overnight charging (via CCS interface). To offer transport companies the flexibility they expect in terms of on-road configuration and capacity planning, the initial portfolio includes both 12 m solo and 18 m low-floor articulated buses. This is because a combination of different vehicles and charging technologies is likely in actual daily operations depending on purpose, line management and topography. This means that overnight charging vehicles with a battery capacity of at least 300 kWh will be able to cover a range of over 200 km. The charging will be executed with up to 100 kW for a period of four to seven hours. Buses with a pantograph on the other hand, require a capacity of 250 to 450 kW on the charging pole to absorb enough energy for a range of 20 km in five to ten minute. The batteries therefore only need a capacity of around 80 to 160 kWh. Additional selection options will also be available for installations such as heating/air conditioning. Options here will include purely electrical systems or hybrid variants.
At the IAA 2016, MAN will be demonstrating the integration of different charging systems in a single modular concept vehicle. By 2018, the MAN e-mobility roadmap will offer the public a pre-series bus version of a battery electric vehicle (BEV). Series production of a 100 percent electrically driven city bus will commence before 2020. Before 2030, MAN Truck & Bus plans to have 50 percent of its sales in the city bus segment consisting of emission-free vehicles.
In principle, the same charging and storage technologies will be employed in buses and trucks. In addition, being part of the Volkswagen Group means that MAN is able to utilise synergies within the Group here and profit from the dynamics of the passenger car sector.
Challenge of standardisation in charging technology
MAN sees standardisation of interfaces for charging technology as an important, but still unmet, challenge. This is because standardisation is a prerequisite for flexibility, interoperability and planning security for urban bus fleet operators and consequently the prerequisite for the successful entry of emissions-free drive technologies into cities. This is why MAN is participating in the “eBusCS” (Electric Bus Charging System) promotion project, for example, supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. From the perspective of manufacturers, the focal points for standardisation include the charging communication according to ISO 15118, positioning of automated charging equipment and positioning of the charging inlet on the vehicle.

MAN Truck & Bus has a wide-ranging city bus portfolio that meets the various mobility requirements of different cities. This includes transport capacity features such as vehicle length and vehicle options (number of doors, internal design, low-floor, low-entry) as well as different drive types. Thanks to its capability of running almost all Lion’s City models on biodiesel and, from January and/or April 2017 also with HVO (hydrotreated vegetable oil), MAN can now provide a full product range with alternative drive systems alongside the tried-and-tested Lion’s City Hybrid. This is complemented by a wide range of CNG-powered buses capable of running on biogas. MAN is the field’s market leader for natural gas drive technology, having sold over 8,000 units since 2,000 (buses, chassis, engines). Overall, this represents a wide range of mature, sustainable and CO2-efficient technologies that are also economical and forward-looking.

MAN’s unwavering commitment to the continued development of its products is clearly reflected in the evolution of the MAN Lion’s City city bus. Over the past three years, the MAN Lion’s City has been consistently optimised in order to offer customers top quality and maximum benefit. The key measures implemented: weight optimisation, improved serviceability, greater passenger capacity, as well as significantly lower fuel consumption. Particular attention has been paid to efficiency and optimisation of fuel consumption. In addition to various weight-reducing measures and Euro 6 exhaust technology, other features include idle shutdown and improved software for ZF and Voith automatic transmissions as well as power-saving interior lighting and LED displays. Other essential features, such as the two-stage air compressor with automatic idle system and optimised cowl flap, also help to reduce fuel consumption. The optimised cowl flap results in improved air flow characteristics, meaning that the engine cooling system has less work to do, thus reducing the amount of energy required. All in all, this can cut fuel consumption by as much as 0.3 l per 100 km, if cleaned regularly. Operation of the ZF-EcoLife Step 3 automatic gearbox has been optimised and this product offers a wide range of software innovations such as softer torsional dampers and updated control electronics. The new software delivers superior retarder performance and closes the torque converter at an earlier point than before.
As of Spring 2016, MAN Lion’s City will also be available with the DIWA6 automatic gearbox by Voith. Customers not only benefit from a marked reduction in fuel consumption, but also from lower noise emissions, achieved by optimum integration of the gearbox into the drivetrain. Besides the development of softer switching operations and an improved, terrain-based switching programme for lower engine speeds, wear and durability of the entire drivetrain are also improved.
In addition, a number of innovations have resulted in a significantly lighter-weight vehicle (around 200 kg less in the case of a 12-meter bus): weight-optimised air-conditioning (Spheros), the new lightweight and ergonomic generation of City Light seats as well as various changes to the frame and body. The new type 4 CNG storage system also significantly reduces the weight of MAN natural gas buses.
Altogether, fuel consumption of the new, more efficient Euro 6 city bus has been reduced by about up to 10 percent compared to the EEV generation.
MAN city buses – proven safety and comfort
In addition to its efficiency-boosting measures, MAN has also extensively developed its city bus portfolio in terms of comfort and safety. Concerning safety, the Lion’s City really scores thanks to its torsion-resistant frame, ESP, EBS, engine start lock, emergency brake signal, rain/light sensor and automatically closing skylights. When the vehicle moves off from a standstill with forebody and afterbody at a fairly tight angle, then the electric articulation control system for articulated buses prevents pushing over the central axle. This ensures that the driver has sufficient torque to manoeuvre the vehicle safely and comfortably in any situation.
In terms of comfort, MAN is one of the first manufacturers of city buses to provide the new ISRI NTS2 generation of driver's seats as a standard feature, whereby MAN places particular emphasis on comfort and ergonomics in the cockpit, the driver's workplace. Key features here are lumbar support (specially formed backrest), three-dimensional adjustable seat, adjustable armrests and seat air conditioning. The convenient low-floor axle also contributes significantly to increased comfort, as does the new City Light generation of passenger seats and the more efficient range of air conditioners.
MAN city buses – easy to service and cost-efficient
MAN has taken the growing importance of life-cycle costs (LCC) into account by making a wide range of improvements in the area of serviceability. Segmented side walls significantly reduce not only weight but also downtime and repair expenses in the event of damage.
Always reliable, robust and low on maintenance, MAN's new city bus doors offer the right solution for tough everyday conditions. The redesigned MAN doors will be available in single-leaf and double-leaf versions, as an outwardly opening door (AST) with pneumatic drive as well as a double-leaf version as an inwardly opening door (IST) (pneumatic and electric drive) . MAN will complement their in-house door range at the IAA 2016 with the electric opening sliding door (SST) as a single-leaf and double-leaf version. The double-leaf SST will enable MAN to be the only provider in the market place to implement an extra-wide step unit at Door 1, and therefore create even quicker passenger flows.
The new doors achieve significant quality improvements thanks to their strain-free mounting in every door position and the use of wear-free components as well as through optimised sensing and cable routing. The door motion is more harmonious, faster and quieter, with no lubrication or adjustment required. The innovative, fully encased drive unit is sturdier and better protected against dirt than existing systems. Only tried-and-tested, durable components will be utilised and high-quality, economical spare parts will be available.
The MAN Lion’s City is characterised by new design developments and improved passenger comfort. The exterior features a black central front flap which therefore enhances all of MAN’s models with a uniform appearance. Added to this are the LED daytime driving lights, which not only improve the buses appearance, but also enhance safety.
In the interior, LED lighting provides a pleasant atmosphere. Exclusive, high-quality upholstery fabrics in sophisticated, elegant colours complete the ambience of the passenger area. The modern interior design is rounded off by USB charging sockets on selected seats and the technical preconditions for fitting a wireless router. A point of particular note is the glazed side wall of the standing platform, available upon special request by the customer, which provides more light in the interior.

Advancing urbanisation, increasing pressure on transport systems, air and noise pollution in cities and climate change all require sustainable solutions for urban mobility. As such, in addition to supporting electric mobility, MAN also relies on a broad spectrum of natural gas vehicles that will continue to undergo further development - as they have for over 70 years, with MAN launching its first natural gas-driven bus in 1943.
Clean travel – CNG buses from MAN
MAN Truck & Bus has been Europe’s unchallenged leader in natural gas buses, currently holding a 39 percent market share. Over one fifth (22 percent) of the city buses sold by MAN in the past year run on CNG. For example, the Hungarian cities of Kaposvar and Miskolc recently opted for 40 and 75 MAN Lion’s City CNG buses respectively.
The natural gas drive is an alternative to the conventional diesel engine that significantly outperforms the current stringent emissions standard without the need for any additional filtering technology or fuel. With no need for technical modifications, such buses can also run on treated biogas, thus making operation virtually CO2 -neutral. MAN currently offers the widest portfolio of natural gas buses on the market, with solo and articulated buses in 12 m and 18.75 m lengths and in low-floor (LF) and low-entry (LE) versions.
Working together with its cooperation partner, “Zukunft Erdgas”, MAN is advancing integrated natural gas solutions and increasing the number of natural gas buses in operation, as well as ensuring the continued development of the fuel infrastructure for the entire natural gas mobility industry. The “Bus of the Year 2015” award is just one indication that MAN stands at the very forefront in the field of CNG. In receiving the award, the Lion’s City GL CNG was particularly recognised for its environmentally friendly, powerful and economical drive.

Few things could have happened that would have been better for the image of the coach than the opening up of the market for long-distance transport in Germany three years ago. Other countries have subsequently also liberalised their long-distance transport regulations. The number of cross-border connections is growing rapidly. The bus has since managed to firmly establish itself as another cost-effective, eco-friendly and safe form of transport for many Europeans. In the last year, more than 20 million travellers used long-distance buses in Germany alone.
However, this particular area of application requires special vehicles. In January 2016, new rules came into effect in Germany stipulating that all newly registered long-distance buses had to provide at least two wheelchair spaces and barrier-free access for passengers with restricted mobility. All of MAN Truck & Bus coaches meet these requirements, as shown by the models on display at this year's IAA. A lifting platform is available on the MAN Lion's Coach and the new NEOPLAN Tourliner to provide access to raised-floor vehicles. The NEOPLAN Skyliner enables access for passengers with restricted mobility via a folding ramp. To create the necessary space inside the vehicle, MAN has developed an extremely easy-to-use solution for bus operators, whereby up to six double seats can be pushed together using a sliding system. This saves the bus company having to completely remove seats as and when needed. Instead seats remain inside so that the vehicle can be made accessible in a matter of minutes – not just in the depot but also on the road.
In addition to these effective solutions, the vehicles also feature impressive efficiency and assistance systems such as the proactive MAN EfficientCruise cruise control with the MAN EfficientRoll freewheeling function or the MAN AttentionGuard awareness assistant. Furthermore, the new passenger seats with adjustable headrests in the MAN Lion’s Coach provide even more comfort for long-distance travel.
Consistently efficient: MAN Lion's Coach EfficientLine
MAN Lion’s Coach EfficientLine is designed to fully combine various efficiency-enhancing equipment. An important contribution to this is delivered by the optimised driveline with the D2676 LOH engine with 460 HP (338 kW). It is equipped with an automated TipMatic 12 gear transmission with optimised gear-change strategy as standard, as well as an eco hypoid drive axle with an extended transmission ratio of i = 2.73. Despite the optimised driveline with a larger engine and automated gearbox, the EfficientLine configuration still weighs in at 100 kg less than the most common configuration of the MAN Lion’s Coach.
A further contribution is provided by the fuel-saving tyres which are fitted on aluminium rims and equipped with the MAN Tyre Pressure Monitoring (TP) system. It guarantees that optimal tyre pressure is maintained at all times which benefits fuel consumption and tyre wear. The wheel cutout trim panels on the rear axle additionally improve the vehicle’s aerodynamics. This yields a fuel consumption advantage of 0.3 l/100 km when compared to buses without mudguard cover panels.
The overall savings potential is optimally rounded off with a professional driver training course available from MAN ProfiDrive. The two day course initially provides the driver with a vehicle briefing to set the basis for the correct handling of the vehicle, which is then followed by a training unit for economic driving.
NEOPLAN Skyliner: the success story continues
Since June 2015, the NEOPLAN Skyliner has been available in the Euro 6 variant. The premium double-decker impresses with its optimum combination of efficiency, environmental performance and exclusive comfort. Its prize-winning 'Sharp Cut Design' with clear, consistent lines guarantees top aerodynamic performance. Fuel savings of up to five percent can be achieved in comparison with double-deckers without aerodynamically-optimised designs. The NEOPLAN Skyliner also sets the standard when it comes to the luggage compartment: with up to 11 m3, it offers adequate space for cases and bags.
The generously designed interior delivers maximum freedom of movement inside the double-decker. And, with up to 83 seats, the bus is perfect for long-distance travel. Its long-distance package, including destination display and 230 V plug sockets and/or USB ports for every seat – together with a new driver's seat featuring optimal positioning – ensure an increased level of comfort for both passengers and driver. Entertainment on both short and long journeys is provided by the Onboard Entertainment system. In addition to optional on-board W-LAN, the Multi Media Coach Advanced media centre with two 19-inch TFT monitors and one 15-inch TFT monitor on top as well as 15-inch flat screens below is also included. For special customer requirements, the MAN Bus Modification Centre in Plauen is on hand to offer a wide range of configuration options.
Special upgrades for special requests
In the MAN Bus Modification Centre in Plauen, every bus is a one of the kind. There an MAN Lion’s Coach can be transformed into a VIP shuttle for the President of Uzbekistan or a NEOPLAN Cityliner into a rolling concert auditorium with 1000 Watt audio power. This special ‘Club bus’ was not only fitted with a lounge area at the rear but also a Plug & Play bass-reflex sub woofer with amplifier which guarantees full base sound inside the vehicle despite its compact dimensioning. Eight separate and freely configurable amplifier channels enable complex system configurations via a single amplifier. For extra passenger comfort in this outstanding vehicle, the BMC specialists installed a glass skylight, an individual kitchen as well as an entertainment system which provides on-board W-LAN, music, films and eBooks. For the first time at the IAA 2016, MAN will introduce a mobile phone charging system with induction charging option. Thanks to LED light effects and other lighting equipment, the bus is able of providing unique lighting ambience. There are virtually no limits to the abundance of design and configuration possibilities.

With its extensive bus chassis product portfolio, MAN has the solution for every situation. The range covers the low-floor, low-entry, high-floor and front-motor segments for body lengths of between 10.2 m and 27 m, European stages Euro 3 to Euro 6, as well as CNG engines for use in city and intercity buses. For countries where high-sulphur fuels are used, MAN offers coach chassis with SCR technology to meet Euro 4 and EEV standards. For countries where import duties are charged on chassis, these are also available as parts kits (chassis in the box – CIB). The chassis are manufactured primarily in Salzgitter (Germany), Poland and India (CLA).
All coach and inter-city chassis are available with the latest safety and comfort systems: active cruise control (ACC), emergency electric brake assist (EBA) and the lane guard system (LGS) for lane monitoring. The rain/light sensor will be offered as an option on all city bus and coach chassis from the beginning of 2017.
MAN works together with over 80 manufacturers. This collaboration is constantly being consolidated in order to ensure customers a consistently high level of vehicle quality. One of our shared successes is the new 12-meter double-decker city bus for the Hong Kong and Singapore markets, jointly developed with Gemilang Coachworks in Malaysia and put to the most demanding tests in Munich. Over 247 of these double deckers have already been sold to Hong Kong and Singapore.
In addition, MAN has introduced its first low-entry buses to Manila. Fröhlich Tours is servicing a new direct route in Manila with 65 low-entry vehicles based on the MAN A84 and MAN RC2 chassis.
Other major contracts come from locations such as Tunisia with an order of a total of 400 A24 and RR8, as well as from Morocco where a large number of 4x2 coach chassis has been ordered.

MAN Truck & Bus viewed the changing emissions regulations as an opportunity to overhaul its engine portfolio. With an optimised drivetrain, the improved engines offer more torque and greater performance with less wear. For the first time, the D26 can now also be operated with hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVO).
D26: higher exhaust gas temperature for optimum treatment
In the future, the 420 h.p. D2676 LOH Euro 6c will replace the 400 h.p. D2066 LOH in MAN and NEOPLAN coaches as well as in the chassis. New to the coach is an improved thermal management system to ensure that the exhaust temperature remains at a high level even in partial-load operation – for example, in normal terrain and/or during minimal vehicle utilisation – allowing emissions treatment systems to perform optimally. This also reduces the engine’s warm-up period. This not only diminishes wear, but also protects the environment.
Still another innovation of the D2676 LOH is a regulated coolant pump. Unlike the previous inflexible, unregulated and constantly rotating coolant pumps, MAN's fully engine speed-regulated water pumps provide requirement-based coolant pump performance. The performance is regulated continuously between 20 and 95 percent. Where demand for coolant is low (e.g. in long-haul transport), 80% of the mechanical power required from the coolant pump can be reduced, resulting in a clear fuel savings potential.
The engine’s innovations include improved exhaust gas recirculation, new steel pistons and an oil level sensor. This ensures that an engine’s low oil level will not pass unnoticed even if manual examination of the oil level is not possible – for example, if a ski carrier at the rear is blocking access to the engine compartment.
Drivetrain focused on efficiency and comfort
With regard to the MAN BrakeMatic electronic braking system, MAN and NEOPLAN coaches and intercity buses will soon feature the more powerful EVBec engine brake. Electronic regulation of the exhaust back pressure enables increased effectiveness of braking over the entire operating speed range, thus achieving a high degree of braking performance even at low speeds.
A new secondary retarder provides optimum braking in conjunction with a high axle ratio of i = 2.73. It achieves higher maximum torque of 4,000 Nm instead of 3,200 as well as a power level of 500 kW, an increase of 80 kW. This provides greater reserves even during heavy braking, thus increasing safety.
The standard MAN TipMatic gearbox employs a new moving-off and gear-shift strategy, optimally matched to the D26 engines. In addition, several new features are included: The new SmartShifting gearbox function plays a key role when it comes to finding the optimum balance between efficiency and comfort when shifting gears. It combines a new, fast shifting procedure in all gears with upshift assistance and shifting adapted to the actual driving situation. For demanding performance in challenging terrain or with heavy loads, the new D26 provides optimised moving-off capabilities. The torque, improved by 200 Nm, also contributes to excellent moving-off behaviour. Overall, the engine’s 20 h.p. of increased power provides superior driving performance across a wide engine speed range.
Idle Speed Driving enables comfortable driving at idling speed without touching the accelerator. With this new feature, the bus/coach “glides” effortlessly through slow-moving traffic with the clutch engaged. While manual upshifting is possible from the first through to the sixth gear, downshifting is performed automatically when the idling torque is insufficient for a higher gear or when the driver brakes.
With the optimisation of the drivetrain, a new generation of the proactive MAN EfficientCruise cruise control is introduced into MAN and NEOPLAN coaches. For the first time, this includes the EfficientRoll free-wheel feature that provides a gain in efficiency even on slight inclines by automatically moving the gear to the neutral “N” position and allowing the bus to move with as little friction loss as possible in the drivetrain. The most recent EfficientCruise generation produced a fuel saving of up to 6 percent and the new features are linked to a further increase in fuel efficiency.

Utilising topography with MAN EfficientCruise and EfficientRoll
For MAN and NEOPLAN coaches, MAN offers an anticipatory cruise control system called MAN EfficientCruise, the latest generation of which includes even more enhancements. The assistance system takes into consideration upcoming uphill and downhill sections along the current route and adjusts the drive position and vehicle speed wherever possible for a more cost-effective driving style. Optimisations incorporated into the new MAN EfficientCruise include a speed adjustment function which anticipates the route and actively intervenes in gear selection. For example, the system now prevents the MAN TipMatic from shifting into a lower gear when appropriate and selects the optimal gear ahead of inclines, thereby avoiding gearshifts on uphill gradients which cause extended interruptions in traction. An additional innovation is provided in the shape of the EfficientRoll freewheel feature, which delivers added efficiency even on slightly downhill gradients by automatically switching the gearbox to neutral position "N" and allowing the bus to roll with the lowest possible driveline friction loss. Fuel savings of up to 6% were already possible with the previous generation of MAN EfficientCruise, and these new functions will enable further increases in fuel efficiency.
MAN EfficientCruise is automatically activated whenever the engine is started. Out of the four available basic parameter settings, the default setting is ECO Level 3 which has a speed tolerance of plus 5 km/h and minus 6 km/h around the set speed. The driver can use the four levels to adjust the speed tolerance, and thereby the degree of fuel saving, to suit the traffic situation. The currently selected ECO Level is shown in the display along with the respective upwards or downwards maximum speed deviation.
The MAN EfficientCruise functions also prevent vehicles from exceeding set speed limits. On long downhill stretches, a maximum permitted speed of 100 km/h is permanently set, regardless of the desired or set speed. Excess speeds of up to 104 km/h are only permitted for a maximum of 30 seconds. If the continuous brake output from the retarder and the enhanced MAN EVBec engine brake is insufficient, then the driver is given a visual and audible warning that the speed is too high. The driver can then also use the service brake to slow the vehicle without cruise control being deactivated.
Improving handling with MAN Comfort Drive Suspension
The active, electronically adjustable MAN Comfort Drive Suspension (CDS) damping system contributes equally to safety and comfort. Thanks to situation-dependent, infinitely variable electronic control of the damper hardness, CDS is able to achieve both safe handling and maximum suspension comfort simultaneously. The system takes into consideration the load status of the bus as well as driving activities (pedal position, speed etc.), the presence of side winds and the road surface characteristics. MAN CDS thereby maximises vehicle stability and improves vehicle handling in critical driving situations. It also provides a considerable improvement in comfort in normal driving operations. Both the vehicle and the road are protected thanks to the resulting reduction in dynamic loads. MAN especially recommends this system for vehicles with a high centre of gravity and in general for applications where the road conditions are very challenging. The NEOPLAN Skyliner is therefore equipped with MAN CDS as standard.
Complete concentration with MAN AttentionGuard
MAN has recently developed the MAN AttentionGuard attention assistant especially for applications which include long motorway stages. The objective of this assistance system is to recognise when a driver's attention is waning, and to warn them if necessary. MAN thus envisages this system being used predominantly on long journeys where a substantial amount of the time is spent on motorways. This is because driving at a relatively constant speed and without any major curves in the road substantially increases the risk of the driver becoming inattentive.
The AttentionGuard gives the driver both a visual and audible warning when it detects a loss of alertness; however, it does not actively intervene in driving activity. The system requires the LGS (Lane Guard System) lane-departure warning system to be installed as MAN AttentionGuard uses data from the LGS camera, amongst others. A conspicuous change in steering behaviour compared to the beginning of the trip is an indication of inattentiveness, distraction or fatigue. If MAN AttentionGuard detects the driver's focus is waning, then the message 'Break recommended' appears in the central display. An acoustic signal is also sounded once for the driver via the speaker located in the cockpit. In this way, MAN AttentionGuard is actively contributing to safety. A warning in the form of a haptic signal via the driver’s seat is also possible.
Keeping on track with MAN Lane Guard System
MAN Lion’s Coach, MAN Lion’s Intercity and MAN Lion’s Regio as well as all NEOPLAN coaches have been available with the latest generation of the Lane Guard System (LGS) lane-departure warning system since the middle of 2015. LGS helps the driver to stay in lane on well-constructed roads. Compared with the previous system, the new generation of LGS features a new camera system with improved software, as well as extended functions. For example, one new function is that LGS is only now activated when both lane markings on the right and left side are detected. In addition the system deactivates itself in narrow lanes and takes the typical, slightly to the outside driving style of commercial vehicles into account. This all contributes to a marked reduction in unwanted warnings which has considerably increased driver acceptance of the system.
MAN Lane Guard System is automatically activated when the engine is started. A video camera behind the windscreen records the lane markings. If the bus leaves the lane without the driver activating the indicators, then an acoustic warning signal is emitted from the loudspeaker in the door on the corresponding side. As an option, a warning can be given by vibrating the corresponding side of the seat cushion. LGS therefore helps to prevent the vehicle from unintentionally leaving the lane due to inattentiveness, a typical cause of accidents on monotonous sections of road.
Keeping your distance with MAN Adaptive Cruise Control
The distance-regulating MAN Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) automatically ensures a constant safe distance from the vehicle in front. The radar sensor, which is behind the front panel, records distances of up to 150 metres in front of the vehicle and the relative speed of any vehicles ahead in the same lane. Based on this data, the lane direction, the vehicle’s own speed and the driver´s actions, the ACC control unit calculates the optimum approach strategy and controls the acceleration and/or deceleration by utilising the retarder or service brake.
The ACC system is activated via the multi-function steering wheel, the toggle switch can be utilised for specifying the target distance from the vehicle ahead. The desired speed, speed of the vehicle ahead, and the selected target distance will be indicated in the display. Depressing the accelerator pedal while ACC is activated overrides the system. Using the brake or retarder lever automatically deactivates it.
In the first instance, adaptive cruise control is designed to reduce driver stress in long convoy journeys as the legally required safe distance is reliably maintained for the driver. At the same time, it contributes to road safety by helping to prevent emergency braking situations and rear-impact crashes – even when weather conditions reduce visibility, thanks to the use radar technology. Optimum regulation of speed adjustment additionally reduces fuel consumption and thereby also emissions.
Quicker braking in emergencies with MAN Emergency Brake Assist
The second generation of the MAN EBA emergency brake assistant enhances safety for all road users, passengers and drivers thanks to improved traffic environment monitoring which uses radar and cameras to identify moving and stationary objects in the vehicle’s lane earlier and more safely - even complex traffic scenarios are interpreted more reliably. If there is an impending collision, then MAN EBA 2 warns the driver visually, acoustically and, as an option, haptically. At the same time, engine torque is reduced or limited, and the brake lights are activated. If the driver does not react, then the system will implement a braking process on its own, even bringing the vehicle to a standstill if required. If the risk of collision ceases to exist because, for example, the slow-moving vehicle ahead pulls over into the emergency lane, then MAN EBA 2 will cancel the braking process and terminate the warning. Full engine torque will be available again once the driver has quickly released the accelerator and then depressed it again.
The emergency brake assist function helps to prevent serious rear-end collisions or reduce their consequences. MAN’s EBA already today fulfils the legal requirements for EU Regulation 347/2012 which will come into force for all newly-registered buses as of 2018.
Keeping tyre pressure under control with MAN Tyre Pressure Monitoring
The MAN TPM (Tyre Pressure Monitoring system) provides the driver with a system that constantly monitors the tyre pressures, and issues a warning if a pressure drops below a defined minimum. To this end, a pressure sensor is attached to every tyre rim and transfers the pressure signal to the control unit via a wireless signal. A warning is automatically shown in the combined instrument display when the tyre pressure is 20% below or 40% above the target pressure. The driver can also call up the tyre pressures manually at any time. As a result, virtually all breakdowns caused by slow losses in tyre pressure can be prevented, thereby increasing safety and simultaneously reducing downtimes. Optimum tyre pressure also contributes to lower fuel consumption and considerably reduces tyre wear. The compressed-air hose and pressure gauge, which are included in the system package, enable the driver to check the air pressure at any time and anywhere.
Great visibility with the automatic light and windscreen wiper system
MAN Truck & Bus offers an automatic headlight system with light sensor for all its bus model series. When the rotary switch is set to "Auto", then the vehicle automatically switches the low-beam headlights on and off according to the surrounding brightness levels, for example as dusk draws in or when driving through a tunnel during the day. The low-beam headlights are also activated in the rain if the windscreen wiper is switched on for longer than five seconds. The rear lights, front running lights (front parking lights), front and rear peripheral lights, side-marking lights, number plate light as well as dashboard illumination will also be activated. The windscreen wiper can also be controlled via a rain sensor. The sensitivity of the automatic windscreen wiper system can be set to four different levels by the driver via a switch on the steering column stalk. The higher the level of sensitivity, the earlier the windscreen wiper will react and the shorter the wipe intervals are.
Both automatic systems reduce driver stress, leaving the driver to concentrate on the road and traffic conditions. By always being appropriate for the prevailing conditions, the bus lighting improves visibility and thereby increases safety.

The NEOPLAN Skyliner wins this year's International Bus Competition (IBC)
At this year’s major comparison test - the International Bus Competition (IBC) - three double-deckers were put through their paces by the jury. At the end of an intensive week of testing, the NEOPLAN Skyliner managed to score the highest number of points and defeat the VDL Futura and the Van Hool Astromega. Head tester Wolfgang Tschakert emphasized the objectivity of the IBC: "Points are awarded based on the opinion of the test team. The team includes taller and shorter drivers with different temperaments and different preferences – just like you would find in a professional fleet."
The NEOPLAN Skyliner, equipped according to test regulations with a long-distance package including wheelchair space, extra wide doors and destination display, achieved the best performance figures in the categories for suspension, passenger comfort and the repair shop test. The top level of the double-decker bus is particularly impressive: the side windows (skylights), which extend all the way up to the roof, provide an amazing view from the window seats, while the roof itself is made of five glass panes and thus allows for an almost continuous line of light to fall onto the middle aisle and create a wonderfully spacious ambience.
Aesthetics aside, safety is also a key feature of this vehicle. The jury were impressed by the braking distances measured during the tests, which ranged between 39.8 and 39.1 metres respectively with cold and hot brakes from a speed of 80 km/h, as well the steering precision and vehicle balance. The latter is assisted by the electronically controlled shock absorber MAN CDS (Comfort Drive Suspension) among other things. Another assistance system built into the test bus is the MAN Efficient Cruise predictive cruise control function and the MAN Attention Guard alertness assistant.
The IBC Award is presented as part of the IAA Commercial Vehicles show 2016. "We are very proud to have won this prestigious prize. It shows that the ongoing improvements to our NEOPLAN Skyliner have really paid off," says Rudi Kuchta, Senior Vice President Product & Sales Bus at MAN Truck & Bus. Since June 2015, the NEOPLAN Skyliner has been available in the Euro 6 variant. The premium double-decker impresses with its optimum combination of efficiency, environmental performance and exclusive comfort. Its prizewinning 'Sharp Cut Design' with clear, consistent lines guarantees top aerodynamic performance. Fuel savings of up to five percent can be achieved in comparison to double-deckers without aerodynamically-optimised designs. The luggage compartment of the NEOPLAN Skyliner also sets the bar high, with best-in-class performance figures: measuring up to 11 m3, it offers adequate space for cases and bags.
The generously designed interior delivers maximum freedom of movement inside the double-decker. And, with up to 83 seats, the bus is perfect for long-distance travel. Its long-distance package, including destination display and 230 V plug sockets and/or USB ports for every seat, as well as its latest driver's seat featuring optimal positioning, ensure an increased level of comfort for both passengers and driver. Entertainment on both short and long journeys is provided by the Onboard Entertainment system. A particular challenge when it comes to long-distance buses is accessibility, but the NEOPLAN Skyliner solves this problem comfortably and conveniently for bus companies, drivers and passengers. Passengers with restricted mobility can access the bus via a folding ramp. To create the necessary space inside the vehicle, MAN has developed an extremely convenient solution for bus operators, whereby up to three double seats can be pushed together using a sliding system. MAN TopUsed sells used vehicles, including both trucks and buses, of premium quality and underpins this with a warranty. This new development means that, from 1 October 2016 onwards, MAN TopUsed will also provide customers with cover for the drive trains in used MAN- and NEOPLAN-brand buses. No vehicle is excluded based on its age – only the used vehicle's mileage and a positively rated general condition will affect the possibility of taking out a warranty. The warranty, which covers the drive train from the engine and gearbox to the axle, is available for a period of six months, one year or two years. Customers are issued with a corresponding certificate.
This means that TopUsed customers can get on the road without having to worry, and even have some flexibility in the event of a claim: MAN TopUsed will ensure that claims are dealt with quickly and efficiently at a MAN service centre of their choice.

With an available range between 3.0 and 44 tonnes, MAN is evolving into a full service provider when it comes to having the right solution for every transport task. The new TGE sees MAN transferring all its usual customer oriented services from the truck business into the transporter class. In the process, the best solution for the customer always remains the main focus. Specially trained and schooled staff is available to provide a competent point of contact. Years of experience and smooth integration with various body manufacturers is as much a matter of course as the close cooperation with the respective corporate customers. The cooperative teamwork between customers, body manufacturers, Sales and Service, thus results in the creation of a vehicle which offers the highest utility value throughout its service life. In terms of target groups, MAN is mainly focusing on the logistics and construction sector, but industry-specific requirements from the skilled trades and passenger transportation are also future areas of application for the lightweight "truck" from MAN Truck & Bus. Common features in all applications: With the lowest cW value of 0.33, the lowest fuel consumption in its class and low repair and maintenance costs, the new MAN TGE impresses with the best total cost of ownership (TCO).
Plenty of space and high load capacity
In addition to the closed delivery van and utility wagon with windows, the selection of vehicle bodies is increased with the addition of chassis with single and crew cabs. Of course, the latter can also be ordered ex works with a wide variety of configurations. For the new MAN TGE, there are two wheelbases, three roof heights and three vehicle lengths to choose from. The vehicle lengths for the closed delivery vans range from 5,983 mm to 6,833 mm and even up to a 7,388 mm long MAN TGE with large overhang. The vehicle heights are estimated at 2,340 mm, 2,575 mm, and 2,800 millimetres. The corresponding combination results in a maximum load volume of 18.3 cubic meters. Standard equipment: an LED-lighted bright interior cargo space. The entry-level MAN TGE starts at 3.0 tonnes permitted total weight – with the upper end of the range being 5.5 tonnes. An additional 3.5 tonnes can be added via a trailer coupling. The maximum payload provided by the 3.5 tonne vehicle is extraordinary. In an ideal scenario, it can carry up to 1.5 tonnes of cargo.
Versatility and efficiency in the powertrain
The range of available powertrains is equally extensive. Depending on the permitted total weight, there is a choice between front-wheel drive, rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, all of which can be coupled with either a 6 gear manual transmission or an 8 gear automatic transmission. With the MAN TGE, a whole new generation of diesel engines is born. It had its debut a good year ago in the globally renowned and successful Volkswagen Transporter, and thus once again embodies long service life and reliability. In addition, the four-cylinder was specially developed with a view to the "hard" requirements of the life of a commercial vehicle. Economy and robustness are at the forefront here, two features which the MAN TGE now combines into a true virtue and promises new optimum economic and ecological values. The range of the 1,968 cm3-large engines comprises versions with 75 kW/102 HP, 90 kW/122 HP, 103 kW/140 HP and 130 kW/177 HP.

Behind the steering wheel, the typical commercial vehicle work place is transformed into a true living space in the TGE. Numerous well-thought-out shelves and racks support the driver in his everyday tasks. The driver's seats, available in four different designs, offer ideal padding and shape for optimal long-distance comfort that leaves no wish unfulfilled. Abrasion-resistant proven covers from the truck series guarantee a long service life.
Highest security with assist system
With the standard EBA (Emergency Brake Assist), MAN makes an essential contribution to traffic safety. Distance sensors serve to check critical distances from the vehicle ahead and help to shorten the stopping distance. The integrated city EBA function also automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds, thereby reducing one of the most frequent causes of accidents, minimizing downtime and repair costs, and increasing the residual value.
The optional backing up assist helps in situations such as leaving a parking spot. Furthermore, a trailer manoeuvring assist function can also be activated as required. The electromechanical power steering compensates for countersteering forces, such as those that result from crosswinds.
The distance-regulated cruise control ensures a high level of comfort on long stretches of motorway. The fatigue recognition and the multicollision brake increase the overall level of safety: the latter can prevent a subsequent collision with other obstacles or road users.
Furthermore, the new series benefits from the professional service offered by MAN: This is known for its uncomplicated help even without an appointment at the workshop, its fast help for weekend and night-time emergencies, as well as the extensive opening hours. The focus of the service extends equally to entire vehicles as it does to flexible maintenance and repair contracts. Warranty extensions, a mobility guarantee and a 24 hour breakdown service round off the scope of workshop services.
Furthermore, MAN offers custom-tailored financial services that assist the fleet manager as well as the owner at purchasing level and throughout the vehicle's service life.

With the TGE, MAN introduces a light commercial vehicle that is set to impress seasoned heavy truck users who have long been working with its big brothers Over the past few years, the European market for light commercial vehicles has seen both a steady rise in registration figures and a gradual expansion of product ranges. Growth rates of around 10% are forecast for the next three years in the C/D segment (maximum gross weight 3.0 to 6.0 tonnes) in Europe alone. The main factors behind this rise in the popularity of large transporters are likely to include the boom in online shopping, universal registration requirements, the harmonisation of driving licence regulations, the wide variety of potential uses and the fact that they behave and handle like a car. Not to mention the attractive design and the almost unlimited number of different configuration options for these vehicles. Key markets for the MAN TGE will include not only German-speaking countries, but also southern and south-western Europe. Most notably the traditionally strong Italian and French markets, for which statistics have shown annual registration figures for new C/D-segment vehicles of more than 120,000 in the past few years. Not to forget the Benelux countries and the United Kingdom, however, where the market for light commercial vehicles is constantly expanding and current sales figures likewise exceed 120,000. Similarly high figures are also forecast for Germany. The previously mentioned consolidation of demands and markets suggests that the number of vehicles sold on domestic soil is also likely to rise to around 125,000 in future. Figures of this magnitude provide solid grounds for optimism. The new MAN TGE is scheduled to go on sale in March next year. Production will start in April 2017, with the market launch in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands following two months later. Other European markets will take delivery of the new MAN in autumn 2017. The transporter will be available in other selected countries in 2018.
Target groups for the MAN TGE
The target groups for the new MAN TGE are as diverse as its potential areas of application. The majority of customers will come from a logistics background, companies involved in courier, express and parcel deliveries, customer service operations or the professional trades. MAN sees its strengths in the logistics and construction sectors, but the new light van from MAN Truck & Bus is equally designed to meet the industry-specific demands of tradespeople and passenger transport operations. The MAN TGE is highly customisable, but all-wheel or rear-wheel drive chassis versions are likely to be most in demand due to their popularity in the building trades. The call for high payload reserves is also expected to boost the market for vehicles with a maximum gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes. Designated MAN TGE sales consultants will be available in Europe to provide expert advice when the vehicles go on sale. Close cooperation with the different bodybuilders, as well as with various key clients, will of course also be a top priority. The high-end nine-seat combi vans for passenger transportation are an unmissable innovation. A further benefit is that professional support for the new series of vehicles will be provided by MAN Service, which is renowned for its helpful approach to every customer – even walk-ins – and its ability to solve problems in a short space of time, even at weekends or overnight, as well as its long opening hours. Their range of workshop services naturally includes flexible repair and maintenance contracts as well as full vehicle services, rounded off by extended warranties, a replacement vehicle guarantee and a 24-hour breakdown service.

A wide range of power train options ensures that MAN can meet a vast variety of customer needs. Depending on the selected drive train, four versions delivering between 75 kW / 102 HP and 130 kW / 177 HP are available, based on a standard two-litre engine. This means that three engine variants each (with overlaps) are available for rear-wheel and front-wheel drive. For the all-wheel drive version of the new MAN TGE, there are two power output options available.

The MAN TGE is powered by a completely new generation of diesel engines which made their debut just over a year ago in the successful and world-renowned Volkswagen Transporter, and thus once again stand for reliability and long service life. Furthermore, the turbo-charged four-cylinder with intercooler has been specially developed to meet the heavy and varied demands placed on light commercial vehicles (not least in terms of journey length). Priority was given to making the vehicles as economic and robust as possible, with a construction designed for minimum mileages of several hundred thousand. The MAN TGE makes a virtue of these characteristics by setting new records both economically and ecologically. The 1,968 cm3 diesel engines come in four different versions: 75 kW / 102 HP, 90 kW / 122 HP, 103 kW / 140 HP and 130 kW / 177 HP, delivering torques of 280 Nm, 300 Nm, 340 Nm and 410 Nm respectively. They consume between 6.7 and 7.0 litres of diesel per 100 kilometres, making them the vehicles with the lowest consumption levels in the segment. Resulting CO2 emissions range between 175 and 184 g/km. Exhaust gas cleaning in accordance with Euro 6 is achieved by means of an SCR catalytic converter which draws AdBlue from an 18-litre tank. Around 0.15 litres of the reactant is consumed on average per 100 kilometres.
Depending on the intended use of the vehicle, customers can choose between three different drive systems. First on the list is a front-wheel drive option, which is standard issue in this segment. Compared to the real-wheel drive version, the load compartment floor is around 100 mm lower, resulting in a lower loading sill and thus offering the largest loading volume in the entire MAN TGE series of around 18 m3. Another advantage is the compact drive unit of the transverse engine and gearbox, which lowers the tear weight and thus increases the maximum achievable payload for chassis of this type. The front-wheel drive version boasts a maximum gross weight between 3.0 and 4.0 tonnes.
The same can be said for the all-wheel drive version: due to the identical design of the forebody, the maximum gross weight again sums up to 4.0 tonnes, allowing the van to carry payloads of around 1.35 tonnes. The advantages of the 4x4 in terms of traction are obvious. The all-wheel drive is ideally suited for applications that require work to be carried out off the beaten track, or for countries or regions with mountainous ascents and descents or heavy winter snowfalls.
The rear-wheel drive versions are built to handle heavy loads. Unlike the other vehicles in the series, their maximum gross weights range from 3.5 to 5.5 tonnes, a figure achieved due to its conventional drive design with longitudinal engine and gearbox. The real-wheel drive ensures superior handling of load distribution, which makes them particularly suitable as a tractor vehicle in operation with trailers. The 3.5-tonne vehicles distribute power using an open differential with single tyres, whereas the heavier 5.5-tonne vehicles have twin tyres to ensure adequate traction with less surface pressure. This is a particular advantage on loose and unpaved surfaces. Finely tuned axle ratios also ensure ideal power delivery regardless of the gross train weight.
Depending on engine type, customers can choose between a six-gear manual gearbox or an eight-gear automatic gearbox. The high number of gears allows for smaller transmission steps, which has a distinctly positive effect on consumption and handling - the large transmission-ratio spread means that the diesel engine delivers exceptional efficiency at all revs without losing pulling power. The eighth gear was designed as a low-rev, fuel-saving overdrive gear, while the shortened first gear facilitates moving off with full loads or in operation with trailers. Both gearboxes can also be used in combination with the all-wheel drive version and a differential lock is available as an optional extra for the rear-wheel drive vehicles. A mechanical PTO with an output of up to 40 kW can be used in connection with the longitudinal gearbox of the rear-wheel driven MAN TGE (see also Bodies and Equipment).
The chassis of the new MAN TGE with its independent wheel suspension at the front (McPherson struts) and rigid rear axle with leaf springs is yet to meet its match in the transporter segment. Safe and easy handling and outstanding car-like driving characteristics were top of the list of priorities at all times during development. As a result, the front-wheel, all-wheel and rear-wheel drive versions of the MAN TGE are all remarkable in terms of their dynamics and driving stability, even at maximum load. A variety of progressive spring characteristics and leaf spring bearings (up to three), stabilisers on both axles and a high-rigidity frame and bodywork also make the vehicles safer to handle. The single-tyre model has a wheel size of 235/65 16 C, while the twin-tyre model has a wheel size of 205/75 16 C. Other tyre and rim sizes can also be ordered upon request.
The vehicles feature electromechanical steering, which imparts extraordinarily agile handling and is a prerequisite for many different safety and comfort functions in various driver assistance systems. Active steering intervention, as used in self-parking systems, is just one example of a feature which requires the steering system to be decoupled from the engine. Electromechanical steering also consumes less energy than conventional systems in which the servo pump is running continuously, thus saving fuel and reducing CO2 emissions. The front-wheel drive version boasts an outstanding 13.6 m turning circle with a wheelbase of 3,638 mm.

The new MAN TGE sets maximum design standards in the light commercial vehicle segment. Although functionality and cost effectiveness were a priority in the development process, the design of the chassis is not lacking in dynamics and elegance, without forfeiting robustness and strength. Concave surfaces effortlessly give way to convex surfaces, combined with clearly defined lines to produce a contemporary and exclusive look.

The masculine appearance of the front is counterbalanced by the harmonious outlines of the new MAN TGE. Even the name TGE (Trucknology Generation Express) reflects the successful symbiosis of functionality and appearance. Despite its primary intended purpose being the transport of goods, the dynamic lines of the chassis with a cd value of 0.33 evoke impressions of agility and speed combined with low consumption. The eye-catching radiator grille and trapezoidal headlights (optionally with LEDs) not only embody the MAN identity, but also translate the Express theme into the resilient and powerful design vocabulary of a commercial vehicle. Furthermore, the engine power and gross train weight of the MAN TGE clearly marks its relation to its big brothers.
This is also true for the driver's workplace of the TGE, with ergonomic functionality being the highest design priority. All of the switches and control elements are within comfortable reach of the driver's seat, making it easy to handle the demands of a busy working day. Not only does this promote a high level of comfort but also contributes to the overall safety, since only well-rested and relaxed drivers can respond quickly to sudden emergencies.
Driver and passenger compartment
Getting into the driver and passenger compartment couldn't be easier. The large door opening and multiple angles at which the door can be held open mean that the actual ascent into the cab is free from obstacles. The multi-stage door check has been deliberately designed to ensure that all drivers, no matter how tall, can easily reach the door handle from the driver's seat. Overall, the cab offers an abundance of space and room for movement, even if the driver is accompanied by one or two passengers.
Behind the steering wheel of the TGE lies anything but the standard workplace of a commercial vehicle. Contributing to this is the driver's seat which is available in four different versions. Its special padding and shape provides secure lateral support as well as high levels of comfort for long-distance driving. Anti-wear seat covers which have already proven their worth in other MAN trucks guarantee durability. The first upgrade from the Standard seat is the Comfort seat. In addition to the usual seat adjustment options, it offers lumbar support, adjustable height and angle for the seat cushion as well as an armrest towards the middle of the vehicle. The Comfort Plus seat offers an extra armrest towards the outer side of the vehicle and a more extensively adjustable electric lumbar support. The ultimate in sitting comfort is delivered by the most exclusive seat configuration available, shaped by our years of experience in the truck industry. In addition to all the adjustment features mentioned above, Comfort Top seats feature air suspension and optionally available seat heating. A two-seater bench for the passenger side is available upon request and can optionally be supplied in a Comfort version including a footlocker and folding backrest. The latter also features a cup holder and a small tray on the back to accommodate snacks en route.
The sitting position in the new MAN TGE leaves nothing to be desired in terms of ergonomics and posture. This is achieved in particular by the steeply angled, easy-grip multi-spoke steering wheel, which can be adjusted vertically as well as axially. A steering wheel with multifunction buttons is available as an optional extra, allowing various electrical devices and communication media such as the radio, navigation system and hands-free system to be operated and turned on and off without letting go of the steering wheel. In addition, a heated steering wheel is also available for particularly cold countries. The drop arms allow for intuitive operation of various functions, including the indicator, windscreen wiper (on/off and intervals) and dipped headlights. Drivers will find it particularly convenient that they just need to tap the indicator stalk lightly in order to make the indicators flash three times. The on and off switch for the headlights is located to the left of the steering column, while the switch for the beam regulator is located to the right. The narrow A-columns and the ideally dimensioned exterior mirrors with extra blind spot mirrors provide the driver with an excellent all-round view.
The large, easy-to-read and elegantly formed circular instruments are typical of MAN vehicles. An each generously sized speedometer and tachometer and two integrated fuel and coolant temperature displays ensure that the driver is always kept up-to-date about the status of the vehicle. Information such as distance travelled, time, range or outside temperature, as well as graphical information for the various driver assistance systems is shown on a central display which is fitted between the two dials as series standard.
The distinctive and attractive flair also continues in the rest of the cab. Premium quality, soft-touch materials are used for all of the panels. The cab roof lining creates a homely atmosphere, while at the same time providing effective insulation against outdoor temperatures and sounds. The distinctive design of the horizontally partitioned instrument panel, which also continues in the door liners, and the central clustering of the infotainment system in the subtly shaped middle console emphasize the high-quality and no-nonsense character of the MAN TGE. The controls for the various audio systems and the heating, ventilation and optional air-conditioning systems take centre stage. All of the operating elements impress with their user-oriented design, functionality and haptic properties.
The fact that customers can configure vehicles to their precise specifications puts MAN far ahead of the competition. In practical terms this means that the basic factory version of the vehicle includes only what is absolutely necessary and expected as standard for a vehicle of this class nowadays. All other features can be added as individual orders or packages, ensuring that every vehicle achieves the best possible TCO for its owner. However, even the standard version of the MAN TGE driver's cab provides everything you need for a safe, relaxed and stress-free driving experience, including not only remote controlled central locking, but also electric windows and thermal glazing. It goes without saying that coat hooks, cup holders and a wide range of compartments for everyday essentials, as well as 12-volt sockets with and without cigarette lighters, are fitted in each vehicle as a matter of course. Digital tachographs are also fitted as standard in vehicles with a maximum gross weight exceeding 3.5 tonnes.
Storage and stowage space
The storage concept in the MAN TGE is a textbook example of how design can be used to meet the overarching goal of making life easier for the driver of a commercial vehicle. Whether we're talking about work equipment, such as yardsticks or other tools, travel documents such as maps and freight papers, or drinks and snacks for the road - the MAN TGE has space for everything and everything has its place. Upon first opening the doors, the view falls on generously sized door compartments that can accommodate 1.5 litre drinks bottles, folders and road maps and are easily accessible before even entering the vehicle. Also stored inside the doors are the first aid kit and warning triangle. The vehicle tool kit is located in a space-saving but easy-to-access compartment under the floor panel in the passenger footwell.
The surfaces of the instrument panel are also consequently used for the incorporation of various storage options. Large open compartments are positioned on the driver side as well as the passenger side and in the centre. The upper compartment is partitioned by a cup holder on the left as well as on the right and a standard 12 V socket enhances the functionality of the storage compartment on the driver side as part of the series standard. On another level below the instrument panel are an additional two cup holders at the height of the corresponding A-columns, a yardstick holder and a tray for small parts, as well as an optional 12 V socket on the driver's side.
An ashtray and an additional 12 V connection are located on the centre console to the right of the gearstick. The glove compartment in the passenger footwell comes with an optional lock and opens downwards. The opening mechanism is positioned on the left-hand side so that it can also be reached by the driver. This compartment is also large enough to hold a 1.5 litre drinks bottle, and if the vehicle is fitted with an air-conditioning system, it has its own air outlet nozzle so that it can be kept cool.
The well thought-out storage concept of the MAN TGE also becomes evident in the generously proportioned storage spaces above the windscreen. They can accommodate large items weighing up to several kilograms and even A4 folders. A slight forward incline and a sturdy edge with a height of around 3 cm stops items from falling out when the vehicle accelerates. The fasteners of the roof storage simultaneously serve as solid hand grips, whereas the centre is dominated by an integrated roof console which houses the interior lighting with additional reading lamps and the associated push buttons. Depending on the vehicle configuration, it also accommodates various other functions such as a glasses holder and switches for operating optional features.
The crew cab version of the MAN TGE merits particular attention. The crew cab is available in a six or seven seat variety with four doors as series standard (rear doors with vent windows) and comes in both wheel base sizes. The passenger compartment is generally equipped with a four-seat bench. Three-point seat belts, height-adjustable headrests and a large and highly functional storage area below the bench are fitted as standard, together with two coat hooks. An additional heater unit below the co-driver's seat supplies extra warm air to the passenger compartment.

The new MAN TGE is a versatile light commercial vehicle with the right body type for almost any transport task. Across a total of three vehicle lengths and the same amount of variable roof heights, the TGE comes in five gross weight ratings: 3.0, 3.5, 3.88, 4.0 and 5.5 tonnes. Together with the available axle ratios and different drive systems (rear-wheel, all-wheel and front-wheel drive), a multi-dimensional portfolio is created from which different industries can select their own bespoke MAN TGE.

The multifaceted character of the MAN TGE already shows in its various available body types. They include the traditional closed delivery van with a normal, high and extra high roof which provides an impressive total volume of up to 18.4 cubic metres. This tallest MAN TGE model comes to a height of 2.8 metres and is available in lengths of 5.98 metres, 6.83 metres and 7.39 metres. Vehicles from the utility wagon range are slightly smaller, available exclusively with a normal or high roof, meaning that these MAN TGEs measure either 2.35 metres or 2.59 metres in height. The closed single-tyre bodies measure 2.04 metres in width, excluding exterior mirrors. The range of basic models is completed by a variety of chassis in single- or crew cab versions. Upon request, they can be fitted with an aluminium flatbed, a tarpaulin and roof bows as standard. A back-to-back cab model will also be available in future.
Depending on the installed fittings and the gross weight rating, the MAN TGE is able to handle a considerable payload. For example a 3.5-tonne closed delivery van with a short wheelbase and normal-height roof can shoulder an impressive 1.5 tonnes. For heavier models, this number increases even further, with the load bearing capacity of the single-cab chassis weighing in at around 3 tonnes. However, even the closed delivery van offers an impressive loading volume. Depending on the drive system, its capacity ranges from 9.3 to a load-hungry 18.4 cubic metres, covering a host of different transport needs. Depending on the body length, the floor space in the hold of the new MAN TGE can accommodate objects measuring between 3.45 and 4.85 metres, whilst at the same time ensuring easy access. The high-roof and extra-high-roof models, which offer a height of 1.96 metres and 2.19 metres respectively, provide comfortable headroom. The model with a normal height roof is the only one with a slightly lower ceiling, still offering a standing height of 1.72 metres.
With its range of possible tonnages and spacious dimensions, the MAN TGE is also suitable for companies that have previously relied on 7.5-tonne trucks. Here the MAN heavy goods transporter particularly impresses with its comfortable and ergonomic driver's cab as well as lower purchase and operating costs. Not to forget: depending on the gross weight rating, driving restrictions at certain times of the day and general speed restrictions become obsolete. In addition, the TGE is comparatively easy to load. The clear loading width of the sliding door measures a good 1.3 metres, meaning that two adjacent euro-pallets can be loaded lengthwise at the same time.
The two rear doors also allow generous access to the hold, with a standard fitted handle on the right-hand D-post facilitating entry for the driver. In models with a high or extra high roof, the aperture height of the tailgate measures a respectable 1.84 metres. In addition to the standard sliding door on the right-hand side, the vehicle can also be fitted with a sliding door on the left upon request. The rear doors are optionally available with 250 degree opening which allows for easier loading and unloading on ramps and in tight spaces. Another convenient feature is the large load-through width between the wheel housings, measuring 1.38 metres in single-tyre models and 1.03 metres in twin-tyre models. This means that there is not only ample space for loading, but also for a variety of fixtures and fittings.
The hold or loading bed of the MAN TGE can be fitted with a variety of different flooring options. Upon request, utility wagon models are available with synthetic rubber flooring, whilst the closed delivery van range can be equipped with multi-ply plywood flooring with anti-slip screen-printed surface. This flooring is fixed to the vehicle with bolts, meaning that it can be easily removed for replacement or during the installation of specific equipment. Total flexibility is provided by the optionally available universal flooring which contains special connection points suitable to accommodate cabinet units from major manufacturers. This means that a variety of additional units can be installed and existing storage systems can be used in multiple ways. Optional built-in longitudinal and transverse rails as well as lashing rails at sill height and below the roof frame enable versatile and easy securing of loads. The hold comes with LED lighting as standard.
Depending on the model and engine type, a towing capacity of up to 3.5 tonnes is possible. The maximum permissible gross train weight amounts to 8 tonnes. Suitable to their field of application, every MAN TGE is ready equipped for the installation of a trailer coupling. This means that cost-efficient retrofitting is possible at any time, whether with a ball-and-socket or bar coupling. The roof of the TGE offers ample room for additional cargo, with the maximum possible load amounting to 300 kilograms for models with normal roof height and 150 kilograms for models with high roof. The roof load capacity for single and crew cab versions comes to 100 kilograms.
Special bodies and attachments
MAN has long made it a tradition to closely collaborate with body manufacturers and producers of various attachments. Since standard features of commercial vehicles often do not fulfil all necessary customer requirements, a large proportion of all transporter vans are sent for customisation after purchase. Only then do they become suitable for their specific application in industries such as construction, municipal operations, logistics or emergency services. With the introduction of the MAN TGE, MAN is now significantly simplifying this procedure from a customer perspective. The TGE presents a comprehensive solution from MAN: one sales negotiation, one financing offer and one sales contract – everything locally and from a single source.
The company is currently working with leading vehicle body manufacturers to draw up plans for bespoke industry solutions for tippers, transportation cases, refrigerated vehicles and mobile workshop vehicles. In addition to the basic vehicles, a chassis with a driver's cabin, a crew cab or a bulkhead cab without rear wall will also be available. For industry-specific chassis, MAN also offers the TGE as a back-to-back cab only.
The MAN TGE is offered with a large range of power take-offs to suit its different intended purposes. For example, two autonomous auxiliary units such as a hydraulic pump and a power generator or air-conditioning compressor can simultaneously be powered by the engine. The durability of the poly-v belt required for this purpose is adjusted to the service life of the engine. In rear-wheel drive models, it is possible to connect a side PTO (power take off) system to the manually operated gearbox (ML 410). Its maximum continuous power stands at 28 kW (38 HP). Even more power can be realised in conjunction with an oil cooling system, in which case up to 40 kW (54 HP) are achievable at around 2300 rpm.
Thanks to the CAN databus technology that ensures information exchange between the control units, the MAN TGE offers an electronic interface (Commercial Vehicle Gateway) which allows body manufacturers to customise fixed settings for various control functions of the vehicle. In the case of a three-way tipper, the following features could for example be automatically initiated at the beginning of the unloading process: activation of the hazard lights and the warning signal for surrounding traffic, adjustment of the idling speed of the engine, muting of the radio and reduction of the top speed to walking pace. In addition, the driver can also launch and control certain vehicle functions, such as tipping, using their “own” smartphone. This primarily eliminates the need for costly retrofitting of specific operating components in the cockpit.
At the IAA, MAN will be demonstrating the versatility of the MAN TGE by presenting three different body types. First off is a three-way tipper with crew cab from the company Scattolini, which has a loading bed and sub-structure made entirely of high strength steel (HSS). The loading bed can either be tipped backwards or to the side by manually adjusting the pivot. The modular construction of the 400 mm high aluminium drop sides features easily replaceable catches and facilitates repairs. In addition, the rear drop side automatically unlatches during tipping. The sliding components and internal guides made of reinforced Nylon and Teflon are self-lubricating, thus limiting wear and tear and ensuring a longer lifespan. A ladder rack and cab protection with reinforced fastening holes serve to protect and secure long items and heavy loads. A rear ladder rack can also be included as an optional extra. The tipping floor is equipped with plenty of fastening points in form of retractable lashing eyes. Maximum resilience to wear and tear as well as weather conditions is guaranteed by the chrome-plated and lapped pistons of the hydraulic system. The system is operated using an analogue push-button panel with a spiral cable. PVC toolboxes with a gravity lock system complete the design.
At Sortimo, the spotlight has been on 'smart mobility' for over 40 years now. This means a total focus on organisation, safety and functionality. This applies equally to vehicle bodies and interior fittings for commercial vehicles as to individual modules for mobile use. Using a closed delivery van with short wheelbase and medium high roof, the Swabian company from Zusmarshausen demonstrates how the load securing systems FlexRack and ProSafe allow for an innovative load securing concept. The large cargo compartment of the van, which measures approximately 11.3 cubic metres, contains extremely functional cargo fittings as they are required by traditional courier, express delivery and parcel services, but which are far from being standard in other vehicles. The concept is made up of three elements: on the left-hand side of the hold, a unit from Sortimo's FlexRack range is installed for systematically storing and correctly securing parcels and other transport goods. The right-hand side wall is fitted with lashing rails which allow for fast securing of any other bulky cargo using Sortimo ProSafe lashing straps. The SoboGrip ProSafe floor is equipped with a range of built-in lashing eyes that can be used with both lashing straps and tie rods. Around one hundred lashing points in every corner of the hold ensure that loads are always secured correctly.
Details in the hold interior include carefully fitted flooring, side wall cladding and roof lining. The SowaFlex side wall cladding and the SoboGrip ProSafe flooring protect the body from being damaged. Thanks to the built-in lashing eyes in the floor, cargo can be optimally positioned and secured in accordance with axle load distribution regulations. Four additional square-shaped tie rods ensure that even large deliveries are always kept well in place. If these tie rods alone do not deliver sufficient hold, they can also be provided with individual lashing points so that lashing straps can be attached directly to the tie rods to further secure the load. It is also possible to attach screw clamps to the tie rods so that sheet material and flat packages can be fastened to them without requiring additional load securing equipment.
On the left-hand side of the hold, a rack unit from the FlexRack product range is installed. These innovative rack units are manufactured from high-quality fibre composite, meaning that they are especially light and boast an exceptionally high load-bearing capacity of 120 kilograms each. The inclination and height of the parcel beds is adjustable. If the racks are not in use during transport, they can be easily folded away and secured with one hand. In this state, the entire hold can be used for bulk cargo and additional lashing possibilities become available. This is achieved with the special ProSafe crossbar installed on the underside of the FlexRack, which can be used to secure loads across the entire width of the rack unit when it is in the folded up position.
The right-hand side of the cargo hold is equipped with two ProFix lashing rails which can be used to secure loads with lashing straps across the entire interior of the hold. The lashing rails are equipped with attachment options for all Sortimo rack systems, meaning that vehicles can be retrofitted with minimal time effort. In addition to these rails, two i-BOXX units and a lashing strap bag containing additional load securing equipment are installed on the right-hand side of the hold. They contain four ratchet turnbuckle straps, ten clamping lock straps, two screw clamps for the tie rods, a hi-vis vest, eight anti-slip mats for pallets, four CargoStopps for securing cargo to the floor and eight flexible edge protectors. Rounding things off is also a collection of practical tips from Sortimo on how best to secure cargo in the transporter van.
Last but not least: the third model. Based on a six-metre long utility wagon with windows, a joint project with the company Bott has yielded a service vehicle that leaves little to be desired when it comes to working off-site. Inside the walk-in interior of the vehicle, a mini workshop has been installed atop an epoxy-resin-coated, anti-slip floor panel made of 9-ply plywood. Including the additional drawer units, under-floor folding compartments, racks and work surfaces, it provides a usable area of roughly 3.4 square metres. Fitted with a fold-up access ramp with a load-bearing capacity of 450 kilograms and a workbench top with a rotating vice, this van was first and foremost designed with motorcycle racing in mind. Completing the equipment are carry cases with numerous compartments for small parts, soft-rubber-trimmed storage trays with specialised brackets and both open and closed floor compartments with a range of load securing systems for tasks such as transporting replacement parts. Bott's constant focus on lightweight construction also ensures that the MAN TGE retains its ability to handle high payloads. Including hold protection components, such as flooring, roof lining and side panel cladding as well as the sturdy access ramp, this brightly-lit mobile workshop with its five LED lights weighs in at only 320 kg. This leaves plenty of space for a motorcycle, replacement parts and equipment.
Parallel to the numerous body solutions on display, MAN has also developed the new sales module 'Vans to Go' for the transporter van sector: The concept involves bespoke industry vehicles fitted with MAN-certified bodies and attachments available for ‘instant sale’. The underlying idea is that since the vehicle is readily available, the customer can immediately fulfil their original order (in theory 48 hours from receipt of the order to delivery of the product). In addition, the customer no longer has to undertake time-consuming configurations for additional options. These industry vehicles ensure that all the equipment features required for immediate deployment are already built in as standard, meaning that only a small amount of customisation is required by the trader on-site or at the depot. The 'Vans to Go' vehicles will be marketed almost Europe-wide via a dedicated internet platform. Additional bespoke solutions will continue to be developed in close collaboration with MAN-certified body manufacturers.
Thanks to the various different wheelbases and overhangs, the available chassis types allow for bodies with a length of up to 3.7 metres (crew cab) and 4.5 metres (single cab). The wide track and standard fitting of all models with ESP (electronic stability programme) and load sensing lay the foundations for an even higher degree of safety when driving. This is also ensured by the axle-load reserves, which are able to compensate for unevenly distributed loads.

A wide range of driver assistance systems helps promote the safety of all road users in the ever increasing density of urban traffic. However, goods transport on motorways is also likely to see a substantial rise in the coming years. MAN has equipped the TGE with numerous assistance systems that not only significantly facilitate driving and steering but also help to effectively monitor the surroundings of the vehicle, thereby reducing the strain on the driver. By including Emergency Brake Assist as a standard feature, MAN is setting a benchmark in the field of safety.

With the introduction of the EBA (Emergency Brake Assist) as standard, MAN makes an essential contribution to traffic safety. Distance sensors serve to check critical distances from the vehicle ahead and help to shorten the stopping distance. Depending on the circumstances, the system responds to critical braking situations in two stages: during the first stage, the assistance system uses acoustic and optical signals to warn the driver of preceding vehicles braking abruptly or driving slowly, thereby alerting them to the potential risk of collision. At the same time, the vehicle is 'prepared' to initiate emergency braking. The brake pads are positioned against the brake discs, but without the vehicle decelerating at this stage. In addition, the sensitivity of the response behaviour of the Hydraulic Brake Assist system is increased.
If the driver does not react to the warning, the second stage begins with one short actuation of the brakes to alert the driver to the risk of rear-end collision. At the same time, the sensitivity of the response behaviour of the Brake Assist system is further increased. This means that full brake output is instantly available if the driver steps on the brake. Should the vehicle not brake hard enough, the Emergency Brake Assist system increases the brake pressure to the level that is required for the vehicle to come to a halt before reaching the obstacle.
In addition, the integrated City Emergency Brake function automatically brakes the vehicle at low speeds, thereby reducing one of the most frequent causes of accidents, minimizing downtime and repair costs, and increasing the residual value.
Rear Traffic Alert
Especially when driving vehicles with a long body, reverse parking in areas with a constant flow of traffic often requires a slow, patient and cautious approach, ideally with the help of another passenger. Within the scope of the system, the parking assistant now supports the driver by monitoring the space on each side of the rear of the vehicle using sensors installed in the rear bumper. If another vehicle starts drawing too close, the driver is warned by an acoustic signal. If the driver does not react to the signal, the system attempts to avoid a collision by issuing a series of braking interventions.
In conjunction with the Blind Spot Detection system, the Side Assist system informs the driver of objects within the critical zone via an LED display in the exterior mirror at speeds over 15 km/h. In case of a potential hazard, the system displays a steady light in the relevant exterior mirror to alert the driver’s attention. If the driver still indicates to change lanes, the LED signal becomes brighter and starts flashing to make the driver aware of the hazard. The Flank Protection Assistant works in conjunction with the ParkPilot, the basic version of which issues acoustic signals to warn of obstacles in front of and behind the vehicle. The Flank Protection Assistant additionally also monitors the immediate lateral vicinity of the vehicle at low speeds and thus helps to prevent minor damages.
Parking or reversing using the rear-view mirror is not for everyone. The same applies to finding a suitable parking space. Now both of these tasks can be accomplished by the Park Assist system. This system automatically manoeuvres the vehicle into parallel and bay parking spaces by executing optimal steering movements without the help of the driver. In addition, it can also autonomously steer the vehicle back out of parallel parking spaces in the same way. The Park Assist system also measures the dimensions of the parking space and determines the necessary starting position – all the driver has to do is accelerate and brake. He does, however, remain in full control of the vehicle at all times.
Reversing or even manoeuvring with a trailer can test the patience of unpractised drivers as well as other road users. The critical steering points at which the trailer responds exactly as the driver intends are easily missed and the inverted view in the rear-view mirror makes it even harder to manoeuvre correctly. It quickly becomes evident that the key factor in precise reversing is the steering angle. The Trailer Assist system takes over the steering if required. The driver simply has to put the vehicle into reverse gear, press the Park Assist button and indicate the direction in which the trailer needs to move via the mirror adjustment. The vehicle then steers itself automatically, whilst the driver remains responsible for changing gear, accelerating and braking.
The MAN TGE comes equipped with electromechanical power steering. Compared to hydraulic power steering systems, the advantage of this system is that it only uses energy when it is actually required by the driver. Apart from allowing for a substantial reduction in fuel consumption, this system also offers new comfort and safety functions. For example, the steering system compensates for counter-steering movements made by the driver due to strong crosswinds or cambered roads. In addition, the active reset function and the precise steering response in the central position allow for less steering corrections to be made and increase the sense of security for the driver. Assistance functions such as Trailer Assist also rely on this system. Moreover, the individual adjustment of the steering assist system to the engine specifications and equipment of the vehicle in which it is installed ensures comfortable steering.
Increased comfort during long motorway drives is provided by the Adaptive Cruise Control system (ACC). The system constantly monitors the area in front of the vehicle when travelling in lines of traffic and helps to create a save and relaxed driving experience. This is achieved by a sensor at the front of the vehicle that constantly measures the distance and relative speed to the preceding vehicle. All the driver has to do is set the desired following distance and speed using the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel and the vehicle will keep an almost constant distance to the one in front. A comparison between the actual and desired distance can also be provided on the multifunction display as an option. Of course, the driver can override the ACC system at any time by accelerating, braking or using the clutch. If the ACC system is installed in vehicles with automatic gearbox, it can slow down the vehicle right up to a complete stop when driving in convoys or encountering traffic jams.
The active Lane Assist helps to avoid accidents within the system limits at speeds of over 65 km/h. To do so, it issues an optical warning to prevent the driver from accidentally leaving the lane. In some vehicles, this is also supported by a signal via the steering wheel. In addition, the Lane Assist system provides gentle and continuous counter steering. The system works via a camera that identifies lane markings, regardless of how many there are or whether they are intermittent or continuous. It even recognises lane markings in the dark or in fog. However, the system cannot function if there are no visible lane markings at all. The Lane Assist system will also not function if the indicator is activated before a lane marking is crossed. The driver can easily override the active Lane Assist system at any time and it does not relieve him of the responsibility to pay appropriate attention while driving.
The Emergency Assist system helps the driver in suddenly occurring hazardous situations. It monitors the constant interaction between the automatic distance control system of the ACC and the active Lane Assist system and thus obtains information about the behaviour of the driver, such as acceleration, braking and steering. If there is no reaction from the driver, the system issues a series of continuous brake actuations to prompt the driver to take over the steering and automatically slows down the vehicle. Emergency Assist also warns other road users by activating the hazard lights and performing slight steering movements.
Uncontrolled subsequent collisions are the primary cause of almost a quarter of all accidents resulting in personal injury. The Multi-Collision Brake attempts to prevent this from happening. If the driver is no longer able to brake on his own after a collision, it automatically initiates braking action within the system limits as part of an integrated safety device. This can prevent subsequent collisions with other obstacles or road users. The Multi-Collision Brake is activated when two separate sensors recognise that an accident has occurred. However, the driver can regain control of the vehicle at any time.
The Fatigue Detection system should be regarded as a purely preventative measure. It analyses and evaluates the driver's steering behaviour in relation to the length of the trip, the time of day and the light conditions. Upon detection of unusual behaviour, an acoustic warning signal and a symbol appearing on the multifunction display prompt the driver to stop for a break.
The Sign Assist system provides information about speed limits and areas in which overtaking is prohibited. The system uses a camera to identify road signs present in the surrounding traffic. Up to three different symbols can be captured and shown on the multifunction display and/or on the screen of the satellite navigation device. The 'most important' and therefore immediately applicable symbol is always displayed first. Subsequently relevant symbols are displayed on the right-hand side next to it.
The Light Assist system provides comfort and safety while driving by automatically switching the vehicle's headlights between full and dipped beam. The system switches to full beam at speeds of over 60 km/h and in total darkness, whereas it automatically dips the headlights again upon detecting oncoming vehicles or vehicles ahead to prevent other drivers from being dazzled.
And that’s not all: round-the-clock service and full knowledge of the vehicle are increasingly becoming parameters that determine the success of a company. Highest profits can only be achieved if a company is aware of the whereabouts and the condition of their work equipment at any given time. A new fleet management solution which is unique in the entire van sector will in future collect and prepare all relevant data and make it available via various digital services. These added value services are available ex works or as retrofits and can provide information regarding maintenance status as well as the overall availability of the fleet.

All vehicles are fitted with a Bluetooth hands-free system to keep drivers safe on the road and to ensure compliance with statutory regulations. The MAN TGE is equipped with a total of two radios and a radio-navigation system. The standard "MAN Media Van" features 2 x 20 watt output and two front loudspeakers. The range of functions includes an SD card reader, a Bluetooth connection for mobile phones and USB/AUX-in ports.
The 8" display with proximity sensor of the "MAN Media Van Advanced" and "MAN Media Van Navigation" guarantees safe operation and eliminates distractions when driving. As soon as the driver or passenger moves a finger close to the touchscreen, the system automatically switches from display mode to input mode. Display mode is a stripped-down version of the normal screen, whereas input mode facilitates intuitive operation by specially highlighting and enlarging touchscreen-friendly options. The display also features a swipe scrolling function which is useful when choosing from a list or browsing for music tracks in your library (accessed from an SD card, for example).
The "MAN Media Van Advanced" radio boasts significantly enhanced functionalities, with music transmitted into the driver and passenger compartment through four loudspeakers. The 8" colour display responds to swipe and zoom gestures in a similar way to modern smartphones. The "Phone" and "Voice Control" menus can also be accessed via the radio in certain models. MAN SmartLink (MirrorLink) is also available. If a smartphone is plugged into the onboard infotainment system, the infotainment screen offers easy access to MirrorLink-compatible apps. And last but not least, a media-in port for iPods.
The "MAN Media Van Navigation" includes extended navigation options with European map data and an additional second SD card reader. The rest of its features and functions are identical. Free updates of navigation maps are also included in the price. The incorporation of the Guide & Inform Services from Car-Net means that this top-of the line system also keeps up with the latest trend of being able to access information anywhere and anytime. Users can search for interesting destinations, available parking spaces or the cheapest petrol stations in the vicinity, access the latest traffic updates straight via the Internet which are then immediately integrated into the navigation map, and much more. DAB is available as an option for both Radio and Navigation models.

Crested with the brand's insignia, the new TGE takes up position in the traditional category of light commercial vehicles with a gross weight rating between 3 and 5.5 tonnes among the range of models produced by the Munich-based truck manufacturer. The TGE will in future be MAN’s primary solution for everyday light transport tasks in the transport and haulage sector. This is demonstrated in impressive fashion by the three different vehicle body solutions presented at the MAN stand in Hall 12.

At the IAA, MAN will be demonstrating the versatility of the MAN TGE by introducing three different body types. Starting things off is a three-way tipper from the company Scattolini, which has a loading bed and sub-structure made entirely of high strength steel (HSS). The loading bed can either be tipped backwards or to the side by manually adjusting the pivot. The modular construction of the 400 mm high aluminium drop sides features easily replaceable catches and facilitates repairs. In addition, the rear drop side automatically unlatches during tipping. The sliding components and internal guides made of reinforced Nylon and Teflon are self-lubricating, thus limiting wear and tear and ensuring a longer lifespan. A ladder rack and cab protection with reinforced fastening holes serve to protect and secure long items and heavy loads. A rear ladder rack can also be included as an optional extra. There are of course plenty of fastening points available around the tipping floor in form of retractable lashing eyes. Maximum resilience to wear and tear as well as weather conditions is guaranteed by the chrome-plated and lapped pistons of the hydraulic system. The system is operated using an analogue push-button panel with a spiral cable. PVC toolboxes with a gravity lock system complete the design.
Using a closed delivery van with a short wheelbase and medium high roof, the Swabian company from Zusmarshausen demonstrates how the load securing systems FlexRack and ProSafe allow for an innovative load securing concept. The large cargo compartment of the van, which measures approximately 11.3 cubic metres, contains extremely functional cargo fittings as they are required by traditional courier, express delivery and parcel services, but which are far from being standard in other vehicles. On the left-hand side of the hold, a unit from Sortimo's FlexRack range made of high-quality fibre composite is installed for systematically storing and correctly securing parcels and other transport goods. This rack comes with an exceptionally high load bearing capacity of 120 kilograms per unit. If the racks are not in use during transport, they can be folded away and secured. The right-hand side wall is fitted with lashing rails which allow for fast securing of any other bulky cargo using Sortimo ProSafe lashing straps. The SoboGrip ProSafe floor is equipped with a range of built-in lashing eyes that can be used with both lashing straps and tie rods. Thanks to the built-in lashing eyes in the floor, cargo can be optimally positioned and secured in accordance with axle load distribution regulations. Four additional square-shaped tie rods ensure that even large deliveries are always kept well in place.

VW Constellation 24.280: The market leader comes with CNG drive
The VW Constellation 24.280, the flagship and market-leading product in Brazil for eight years running, will be appearing at the trade fair with a CNG drive system, which is a sustainable addition to the conventional diesel engines on offer. Estimates for the prototype envisage a 20% reduction in nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions compared with certifiable diesel engines in Brazil, which is compliant with the Euro 6 emissions standard and surpasses the current Euro 5 standard. With a range of up to 200 kilometres, the gas storage tank doesn't change the load capacity of the truck in comparison to the diesel version. The maximum load is 12.5 tonnes. Using beverage logistics as an example, this amounts to ten pallets each weighing 1,250 kilograms or a total of 9,400 bottles.
With regard to its most important technical specifications, the VW Constellation 24.280 stands out thanks to its MAN E0836 280 hp engine with manual 6-gear shifting system and 'SmartRatio' driveline technology. This has been fully developed and patented by the engineers at MAN Latin America in Resende. It uses the two axle transmission ratios on the dual-speed axle to multiply the gearbox potential.
VW Constellation 25.420 Prime: environmentally friendly and powerful
A further highlight of MAN Latin America's appearance at the trade fair will be the VW Constellation 25.420 8x2 Prime, the anniversary model to celebrate ten years of the ConstellationLine, the market leader in the Brazilian truck market. The most powerful vehicle in the Volkswagen truck portfolio is fitted with a Cummins ISL 9-litre engine, which produces over 420 hp and 1,850 Nm of torque. The 16-gear V-Tronic ZF automatic transmission results in significant fuel savings, thus increasing productivity and profitability during use. The reduced overall weight is one of the model’s greatest advantages, as the maximum load has been increased by one tonne in comparison with its major competitors.
Alongside a significant change in the interior, exclusive colours, automatic V-Tronic gearbox and other high-quality details, the exhibited model has a strong focus on environmental aspects. The environmentally friendly driver compartments are made of up to 18% recycled plastic components, thus succeeding in making the vehicle more sustainable overall. The new design results in a weight reduction of 12 kg.
VW Volksbus 18.280: optimised for biofuel from sugar cane
In the passenger transport sector, MAN Latin America will be showcasing a very 'Brazilian' solution at the IAA: the VW Volksbus 18.280 OT LE is compatible with biofuel obtained from sugar cane.
The completely air-sprung chassis with its powerful, 280 hp MAN 6-cylinder D08 EGR engine and ZF Ecolife automatic gearbox has been developed for use with renewable fuels, with a view to reducing nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions by 30-70%. The VW Volksbus 18.280 has capacity for 40 passengers.
Telemetry: new means of reducing emissions
MAN Latin America has expanded the functionality of its Volksnet (Volkswagen) and MAN Guard (MAN) systems. It has introduced a telematics system for fleet management, monitoring and vehicle tracking, which has been specially developed for Volkswagen and MAN models.
The exclusive CO2 emissions report allows the vehicle's CO2 output to be measured in order to make an active contribution towards achieving sustainability targets. More and more companies are demanding this information from their suppliers. The graph displaying the results of any fleet vehicle can be used to track, compare and verify the impact of the implemented programme over time.
One of the principle innovations of the telematics system is that you are informed of the truck's efficiency in real time, either on a vehicle-by-vehicle basis or across the entire fleet. This also takes into account the run times of the air conditioning system, slow-moving traffic and more significant contraventions during the journey.
Volksnet/MAN Guard is an integrated tool geared towards boosting productivity and reducing costs. Initial tests have recorded savings of up to 20%. The system also helps to control emissions, a subject of fundamental global importance.
